Position Description:
POSITION PURPOSE

The Manager, Sustainability Communications is a core member of The Home Depot Brand Communications Team, and plays a key role in the company's messaging strategy by developing, refining and leading a high-impact earned media strategy that supports the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability.  This role coordinates the delivery of the company’s sustainability report and makes recommendations to senior leadership to execute strategies to enhance the internal and external communications approach to sustainability initiatives. A highly motivated, and organized self-starter who thrives in a goal-oriented business culture will have the opportunity to observe, document, build, analyze and improve the company’s sustainability communications thought-leadership program.

The Manager, Sustainability Communications will identify opportunities with key external stakeholders, primarily media and industry influencers, to convey a narrative about the organization concentrated on sustainable efforts.  This role is an excellent opportunity for career advancement and personal growth to the successful candidate who demonstrates differentiated drive, leadership skills, creativity and a collaborative spirit.  Working with The Home Depot’s Sustainable Business Category, the candidate must be able to collaborate and influence key internal stakeholders cross-functionally to manage and enhance business, consumer and trade communications programs.  He/She must be an excellent project manager, poised and diplomatic, possess strong media relations skills as well as possess superior written and verbal communication skills.  

MAJOR TASKS, RESPONSIBILITES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Build and maintain comprehensive knowledge of sustainability initiatives and programs across the company
  • Serve as internal leader and “go to” expert on emerging trends, frameworks, and industry benchmarks
  • Collect and analyze company-wide data on sustainability initiatives and collaborate with key stakeholders to provide senior management with relevant analysis and recommendations on sustainability programs to develop an earned media strategy
  • Drive storytelling efforts in support of company’s sustainability programs in an effort to continue to position company as a thought leader in the category and market
NATURE AND SCOPE
  • Typically reports to the Senior Director, Product Innovation and Social Impact Communications
  • May have dotted line reporting relationship to Division President.
  • Typically requires the ability to lead negotiations in a highly competitive or adversarial environment.
  • Typically faces situations are unstructured and require original approaches.
  • Typically solves problems by considering courses of action within the framework of management' s goals and standards.
  • Typically expected to provide infrequent status reports to management only as appropriate.
ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Located in a comfortable indoor area. 
  • Under regular pressure to meet deadlines, quotas and/or must frequently deal with difficult issues related to people or situations.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be eighteen years of age or older.
Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

Education Required:
The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field of study related to the job.
Years of Relevant Work Experience: 8+ years
Physical Requirements:
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Additional Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree Communications or Public Relations preferred, MBA a plus
  • Track record of success and achievement demonstrated in sustainability, environmental sciences, corporate social responsibility, community relations or a related field, a plus
  • 8+ years combined corporate and agency experience with a CPG.
  • Retail PR required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
  • Relationship management with media, external agencies, and business partners
  • Strong research skills and ability to analyze and interpret data to create reports
  • Demonstrates learning agility, strong thinking and analytical skills. Ability to get up to speed with new processes/procedures and able to adapt readily to change

  • Ability to plan and manage schedules for multiple tasks
  • Ability to influence a cross-functional team and peers and work independently to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, rapidly-changing environment
