Description:

The candidate should have demonstrated knowledge and experience in Defined Contribution, Defined Benefit, and Non-Qualified plan administration/consulting, and understand the needs of the market, our clients, intermediaries and participants.  This candidate needs to possess the courage and ability to challenge the status quo when appropriate. This candidate requires in-depth knowledge of the organization, business group, department, and Service Offering.  Candidate may act as a mentor, but has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

 

This role will report to the Segment Lead of Business Underwriting.  The position can be located in any of Retirement Divisions major locations. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Detailed analysis (aka business underwriting/review) of an “opportunity” (new or existing Defined Contribution, Defined Benefit, or Non-Qualified relationship), using a standardized Product & Service Offering “guide”, based on information furnished by the Intermediary/Plan Sponsor preceding bidding on or being awarded new business.

  • Evaluation of the risk and exposures of potential clients (in collaboration with Product, Service, and Operational SMEs) based on deep understanding of known record keeping capabilities, assesses the premium that should be applied for the services if nonstandard, or whether to accept or decline the risk. 

  • Work with teams throughout the organization to ensure that we are representing our capabilities accurately (from the opportunity stage through win/transition). 

  • Ensure sales and business goals are met while protecting the company's book of business (current and future) from risks that they feel could create a loss and ensure revenue is commensurate with the potential exposure.  The underwriters may decline the risk, recommend design alternatives or approve nonstandard service offering exceptions. 

  • Consult with RFP Team, Financial Underwriting/Pricing, Sales, Sales Mgmt, and/or Client Facing teams throughout the Request for Proposal process (including Go/No Go decisions) as well as with external customers with the authority to exercise significant discretion in decision making

  • Provide consultative assistance to sales team during preparation of prospective client visits and/or finals meeting

  • Provide consultative assistance to Client Service and Key Account Teams regarding, but not limited to, requested changes to the products and services of existing business plans.

  • Consult with internal partners (e.g. Law, Contracts, and Client Facing Teams), as well as the client and their legal advisors related to custom contractual changes (including but not limited to the administrative Services Agreement) with the authority to exercise significant discretion in decision making.

  • Primary responsibility for underwriting of nonstandard product/service offering exception requests through the Exception Underwriting Process (with the authority to exercise discretion in decision making).  The underwriters may decline the risk, recommend design alternatives or approve nonstandard service offering exceptions. 

  • Consult with our Product partners in providing trend analysis that illustrates shifts in the market place and recommend future developmental service offerings in order to stay ahead of market changes

  • Facilitate the Company’s Service Guarantee process for new and existing business.


  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience working in retirement services industry required, underwriting experience preferred

  • Experience with Defined Contribution (corporate and tax-exempt), Defined Benefit, or Non-Qualified plans required

  • OMNI recordkeeping system knowledge preferred

  • Knowledge of and experience working with plan documents preferred

  • Knowledge of and experience working with form 5500 and associated attachments preferred

  • Strong collaboration skills required to work across Prudential Retirement to develop and execute strategies that align with business goals

  • Understanding of the needs of intermediaries, sponsors & participants

  • Excellent decision making and problem solving skills

  • Courage and ability to challenge the status quo when appropriate; i.e. a change agent

  • Ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines

  • Strong problem solving, negotiation, consulting and conflict management skills

  • Ability to quickly execute on strategic decisions to drive organizational results.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and to easily adapt to changes in priorities to meet marketplace and business needs.

  • Superior oral and written communication skills, ability to translate complex ideas into clear and simple format.

  • Experience establishing metrics and tracking results to metrics.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • FINRA Series 6 license required within 120 days of hire
