Description

Fox 13 is searching for a Managing Editor to supervise the day-to-day editorial operation of the newsroom. The right candidate will be someone who can deliver the brand promise that is Fox 13, interpret research, and think critically about the major news happening in Memphis. The Managing Editor should have a passion for breaking news coverage, digital news coverage, and social media. The ideal candidate will also bring excellent leadership and teambuilding skills. This is the number 2 role in the newsroom-so excellent communication and people skills are required.
The Managing Editor’s duties include (but are not limited to):
 --Supervise the editorial content of the Fox 13 news product.
 --Proactively exercise journalistic judgment in maintaining accurate, unbiased Fox 13 coverage.
--Work closely with the News Director, Executive Producers, Digital Team, Assignment Editors, Producers and Reporters in planning the day's assignments.
--Provide constructive editorial feedback to news staff.
--Make sure content is executed on all platforms, including website and social media sites.
--Anticipates and executes complex planning for major news events such as elections and anniversaries as well as develops comprehensive systems to ensure success for unexpected breaking news on a large scale.
--Report directly to the News Director and act in place of the News Director when appropriate.

Qualifications

The position requires a minimum of 5 years of newsroom experience and at least two years of management experience. Prior experience as an Executive Producer, Assistant News Director or News Director is required.
College degree preferred.
 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
                1.            To edit and approve reporter narration track for broadcast.
                2.            To ensure special segment and series production meets/exceeds Fox 13 news standards.
                3.            To critique individual story planning and execution; to confer with reporters on story concept and updates.
                4.            To approve developing concepts of reporters' scripts; to insure stories meet time and length criteria to make assigned positions in the shows; to insure that stories are factually correct and completely updated when they air.
                5.            To monitor the production of special reports.
                6.            To work closely with the TV News Director, Supervising Photographer, Executive Producer, Assignment Editors, Operations manager, Anchors, and newscast production crew to continually improve the on-air look of the shows.
                7.            To be conversant with journalistic law and ethics and those general FCC policies concerning broadcast.
                8.            To recommend hiring, compensation and termination of persons supervised.
                9.          To insure that all supervised persons receive semi-annual performance reviews, complying with Fox 13 and Cox Media Group procedures of documentation.
                10.          To act in place of the News Director when he/she is away        
                11.          To keep the News Director apprised of all activities affecting the TV News operation.
                12.          Manage the newsroom scheduling, to sign time sheets and approve overtime using Fox 13 approved systems.
                13.          To work additional hours as may be necessary to complete a specific project.
                14.          To communicate with all Fox 13 employees, viewers/listeners, clients and suppliers in a helpful, positive and professional manner.
                15.          To monitor the comprehensive assignment and coverage of beat assignments by all reporters.
                 16.           To examine digital analytical and provide direction for mobile, website and social media.
                17.          To complete other projects as requested by the TV News Director.
