Job Description

The Medical Assistant is a nonexempt position responsible for performing a variety of duties depending on whether it is a small clinic, large medical practice, multi-clinic, or a specialty office. Implements and notes response to an age-appropriate plan of care utilizing assigned components of the Nursing Process, Clinical Skills, and Patient Education. Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and employees. Will report risks to patient safety and implement the appropriate precautions. Will comply with appropriate and approved standards. Provides clerical support, coordinates unit needs and other duties as directed by Supervisor. Maintains professional behavior when dealing with issues or conflicts, utilizing appropriate resources, as needed. Assists to provide an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and employees. Applies appropriate policies and procedures for the following: registration of patients by obtaining demographic and financial information with explanation and collection of payment obligations; order entry and processing; provision of clerical support for the team; schedule patient appointments and coordinate as need with various department; assists the licensed nursing staff with implementation of appropriate plan of care and performs duties as delegated; cross-train to other job duties as deemed appropriate by Supervisor; accepts additional duties as assigned and implements and notes response to an age appropriate plan of care. The CMA will report risks to patient safety to Supervisor and implement the appropriate precautions. The CMA will comply with appropriate and approved standards.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent required
  2. Successful completion from an accredited institution with a CMA certification
  3. Type minimum of 20 words per minute
  4. Good communication and interpersonal skills
  5. Computer experience recommended
  6. Healthcare experience desirable
  7. Bi-lingual ability desirable
  8. Previous Experience with Medical Terminology preferred
  9. Must possess current BLS certification upon hire and maintain certification throughout employment
  10. Minimum of one year experience in hospital setting, prefer 2 years

 

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to read and write in English
  2. Ability to communicate with patients, families, staff, physicians, support agencies, vendors and others
  3. Ability to remain calm  and composed under stress
  4. Ability to evaluate and interpret information and make independent decisions
  5. Ability to tolerate low noise levels for prolonged periods
  6. Ability to determine colors
  7. Ability to respond to pages, telephones and other auditory stimulation
  8. Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  9. Ability to function when exposed to infectious organisms, agents and toxic chemicals
  10. Bending and lifting (minimum of 30 lbs), grasping, fine hand/eye coordination, pushing and pulling repeatedly, twisting, squatting and stooping
  11. Utilizes correct technique to prevent needle stick
