Behavioral / Mental Health Technician– Wyoming Behavioral Institute, Casper, Wyoming

Wyoming Behavioral Institute serves the citizens Wyoming by providing Inpatient and Residential Psychiatric care. Located in Casper, Wyoming, we are a 110- bed acute care hospital with residential care. We provide acute care for children, adolescents, and adults, as well as residential treatment for children and adolescents. We are seeking individuals who are passionate about caring for others and possess strong communication skills.

Wyoming Behavioral Institute, a UHS Facility, is seeking a dynamic and talented BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TECH / MENTAL HEALTH WORKER .

POSITION SUMMARY:  Provides direct and indirect patient care in any dept. as assigned under the direction of a registered nurse or lead mental health specialist.  Provides for the personal care and comfort of psychiatric patients.  Provides a clean, safe environment, maintains equipment and supplies.  Works closely and productively with other unit staff to assure overall coordinated and therapeutic functioning of the milieu. Provides input to improve the functioning of the unit system, rules, and schedule.  Assists in training and mentors new employees.  Expected to give (2) two-weeks notice prior to voluntary resignation.  A probationary period of ninety (90) days is required. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Implements (under the supervision of a nurse) and provides guidance to others on the effective and timely use of milieu tools (such as decreased stimulation, room changes, Time Out’s, staff check-ins, Reflection Room, Shift Report, Use of North Hall, Collaborative Problem solving Basket approach to intervention.).
  • Works closely and productively with all staff to assure overall coordinated and therapeutic functioning of unit. Is expected to accept assignment, with a positive attitude, to any unit in the facility if census or acuity indicates.
  • Provides input to improve the functioning of the unit system, rules, and schedule on base unit. 
  • Monitor patient safety by consistently completing observation rounds.
  • Operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Assists in orientation and mentoring new staff members responsibly to unit(s).
  • Monitors and provides training to newly hired MHWs regarding appropriate documentation.
  • Embraces the Collaborative Problem Solving approach and the Basket method for problem solving.  Promotes other staff to enhance their skill at this as well. 

Other Functions:

  • Fully orients new patients to unit program, obtains admission vitals and records on the Nursing Assessment Form.
  • Records and processes patient belongings on admission and discharge.
  • Performs and records patient’s vital signs, intake and output, meal monitors, enuresis logs, per orders and notifies RN of any changes/abnormalities.
  • Provides general patient care, i.e. assisting patients with ADLs, making beds, transferring patients.
  • Demonstrates understanding and competency in assessing and intervening appropriately for developmental age of clients, developmental growth patterns and relevancy to treatment.
  • Continuously observes patient behavior, mental status, and activities.  Demonstrates the ability to identify patient behaviors that require intervention.  Intervenes within ability and skill and notifies RN of any changes or unusual behaviors or concerns.
  • Performs patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Safely escorts patients leaving the unit for activities and scheduled tests.
  • Performs patient safety checks at scheduled times, and records this appropriately.
  • Performs patient observation rounds appropriately and safely.  Assures that others work together to perform observation rounds correctly.
  • Effectively engages in crisis prevention and verbal de-escalation. 
  • Role-models excellent verbal and non-verbal de-escalation skills to safely and therapeutically manage aggressive patients.
  • Actively and positively embraces Service Excellence and the Engagement Model of care striving to perfect skill at the Basket approaches to patient problem solving.  Assists with physical crisis intervention using “Handle with Care” approved holds under the direction of an RN.
  • Sets firm, consistent, neutral, and non-judgmental limits per the unit guidelines.
  • Consistently contributes effectively to inter-shift communication by assuring that staff record information on the chart, and report forms and updates as needed.
  • Uses appropriate, specific, and objective documentation showing evidence of observed factual data, interventions utilized, and teaching per patient’s treatment plan along with patient’s response. 
  • Consistently has effective check-ins with assigned patients to provide emotional support, assess safety and symptoms, develop rapport, develop direct communication skills, and teach per protocols and treatment plan.  Allows time for and encourages questions, explains issues to patient in a language the patient can understand and uses therapeutic communication techniques
  • Is proficient at assessing patient’s safety risk.  Alerts nurse to need for status changes.  Alerts nurse when Suicide, Assaultive, Sexual, or Fall Protocol is needed...
  • Answers telephone and greets visitors in a professional manner, uses patient contact sheets appropriately to assure adherence to hospital and unit rules.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be organized and flexible, acts appropriately in stressful/emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Works indoors in a temperature controlled environment on a carpeted or tiled work surface.  May be exposed to occasional slippery floors, objects on floors, chemicals and/or sharp objects.  May be exposed to hazardous materials, blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases.  May be subjected to stressful situations. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Patient observation rounds require walking, without stopping, from 10 to 145+ feet every 15 minutes a minimum of 2 hours per day, maximum of 8 hours per day.

Position Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES RECOMMENDED:  Must be a High School graduate or have an equivalent to a High School diploma.  We prefer at least two (2) years of college in a related field and/or be a Certified Nurse’s Assistant and have at least two (2) years of experience in healthcare as a technician, optimally in a psychiatric setting.  Must have the ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing.  Additional language skills are helpful.  Will need to have knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures.

PERSONAL TRAITS, QUALITIES & APPTITUDES:  Experience in a psychiatric facility is highly preferred, but 2 years of college from an accredited institution and 2 years of experience in a healthcare or psychiatric setting and good communication skills may be substituted.  Must be empathetic, self-aware, and assertive.  Must work effectively with a team as well as individually; have a professional demeanor; a strong sense of responsibility and integrity.  Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Must be skilled at communication and interventions and possess excellent leadership skills.  Must be in good mental and physical condition.  Exceptions to these qualifications may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and in consultation with other administrative staff.  Crisis control interventions/behavioral management techniques may require physically restraining and transporting patients.
