Job Description

::The Mental Health Technician provides direct care services and management of children and adolescent patients as prescribed by the physician, therapist, and the treatment team.  The MHT assures patient safety, environmental safety and manages patient behavior.  The MHT also assists in maintaining safety and cleanliness of the unit.  Ninety percent of time spent on the job involves direct patient care—interacting with the patient, either individually or in a group setting.

Performs position specific job functions at an acceptable level.  Completes position responsibilities by following established guidelines and protocols within appropriate time frames.  Implements prescribed treatment schedule.  Attends to physical needs of patients, such as assistance with personal hygiene tasks, monitoring ADLs, and if necessary feeding and mobility.  Provides age specific intervention and supervision appropriate to the developmental level and specific treatment needs of the individual patient.  Conducts and assists with selected educational, rehabilitative, and activity groups as assigned and document according to policy and procedures.  Provides timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of patient behavior and treatment.  Documentation reflects professional standards.  Assures patient’s rights; acts to prevent, identify, and report abuse.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities:

  • Accurately conveys patient behavior and status verbally and in writing. Professional verbal and written skills for communicating patient status and treatment needs to clients, families, professionals, and employees of the facility. Able to verbally adapt spoken communication to meet needs of patient.

  • Proficiency in facilitating patient education groups, recreational activities, and training ADL skills.

  • Maintains professional therapeutic relationships with staff, patients, families and visitors. Able to maintain patient confidentiality.

  • Ability to safely manage a dangerous and aggressive patient, to verbally communicate to de-escalate a crisis situation, to physically restrain patients by individual or team restraint per policy, and to protect self and others from aggressive patients or other accidents.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks under deadlines and with short notice.



  • Requires high school graduate or equivalent.

  • Prefer Bachelor's degree in the psychology, social work, or related field.



    Current Oklahoma Driver’s License (Required for staff on Driver’s List)



    Prefer two years work experience in a psychiatric treatment setting with children and adolescents.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Physical strength necessary to implement patient behavioral crisis intervention.

  • Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping as required to assist in patient care. Able to sustain physical activity eight hours a day and remain on feet eight hours per day.

  • Hearing, vision, sensory, and emotional stability sufficient to perform essential job functions.

  • Able to deal with stressful situations and changing priorities.

  • Able to lift, carry, and lower up to 35 pounds using appropriate body mechanics.

  • Able to push patients in wheel chairs up and down hills and pursue running patients.

  • Access to reliable transportation; maintains reliable attendance record and arrives in a timely manner.
