Job Description
JOB DUTIES: Mental Health Technician 1. Escorts patient from admission area to unit and ensures patient room is prepared for use. 2. Follows the guidelines and accurately completes the Admission check sheet and other admission requirements. 3. Thoroughly completes personal and belongings search for contraband including body search. 4. Accurately takes, monitors and documents vital signs at time of admission and on an ongoing basis to include temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation and reports all vital signs results to the nurse 5. Orients patient to unit and gives tour of unit. 6. Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients and provides assigned patient care within the general policies, philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Department and the hospital. 7. Implements interventions appropriate to the developmental needs of the patient in accordance with the treatment plan demonstrating sound clinical and professional judgment and competency. 8. Monitors unit milieu and maintains a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, family member and staff. Modifies milieu according to developmental needs of the patients in collaboration with lead MHT and charge nurse. 9. Responds to patients in crisis and acts according to developmental needs of the patient to ensure patient and unit safety. 10. Completes patient rounds timely in accordance with unit requirements and accurately documents patient observations concurrently on the Patient Observation Record. 11. Demonstrates understanding of program patient level system to include privileges, consequences, etc. with regard to children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. 12. Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to special treatment procedures for precautions, seclusions, restraints, elopements, close observations and searches. 13. Observes patient behaviors, informs charge nurse and/or Lead MHT of changes and implements procedures as directed by the nurse. 14. Uses the least restrictive approach to behavior management and reflects same in documentation. 15. Is knowledgeable of seclusion and restraint systems utilized with regard to children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. 16. Accurately and thoroughly documents the maintenance of special treatment procedures in shift notes and on special observation record. 17. Demonstrates ability to recognize different types of abuse/neglect of patients and reporting mechanisms of such issues. 18. Utilize knowledge and skills related to crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation in order to provide a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. 19. Accurately and thoroughly documents interventions using goals developed in the Individual Treatment Plan. 20. Demonstrates knowledge of various mental health diagnoses and effect on patient treatment. 21. Provides for age appropriate recreational needs for children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. 22. Safely uses and maintains biomedical equipment. 23. Demonstrates knowledge and use of infection control/standard precaution principles to prevent exposure to and transmission of disease. 24. Obtains information from nurse regarding special needs related to medications and dietary restriction pertaining to children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. 25. Accompanies patients off of the unit when instructed by the nurse, maintaining safety and eye-sight supervision at all times. 26. Manages patient meals and snacks on the unit and assists patients as necessary considering age and developmental needs 27. Assists patients with: dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, hygiene, and laundry as necessary considering age and developmental needs. 28. Provides measures which promote sleep as necessary considering age and developmental needs. 29. Performs problem solving and decision making in a logical and deliberate manner utilizing resources, when appropriate. 30. Exhibits flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the patients and unit. 31. Demonstrates understanding of psychiatric emergency levels and effectively and safely responds to emergency situations in a calm, constructive and positive manner. 32. Utilizes effective communication skills in reporting pertinent information in a timely manner. 33. Informs charge nurse and/or Lead MHT of current activities on the unit and reports unusual occurrences, incidents and other problems. 34. All documentation is clear, concise and timely. Utilizes appropriate documentation based on training at The Pavilion. Ensures all documentation contains legible signature, date, and time of documentation. 35. Accurately and effectively communicates patient behavior and interventions to oncoming staff. 36. Assists in the orientation of new staff to the unit. 37. Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth and development through participation at in-services, workshops, and staff meetings. 38. Is receptive to supervisory feedback and appropriately utilizes feedback. 39. Establishes own professional goals and plans for future growth. 40. Participates in unit staff meetings, hospital committees, program development and innovations which will enhance the quality of services provided to patients. 41. Recognizes own limitations, seeks information and advice when unable to solve conflicts/problems on an individual basis. 42. Demonstrates competency in the following areas: 43. Annual OSHA/Infection Control, TCI, and other competencies as assigned. 44. CPR Training (every 2 years) 45. Biomedical Equipment training, as needed, Seclusion and Restraint training , RTC Basic Expectations, Professional Boundaries, Medicaid Documentation 46. Is knowledgeable of and participates in hospital/Performance Improvement Program. 47. Adhere to all safety policies and safe work practices. 48. Attend all hospital safety trainings 49. Represents the hospital in a manner which conveys a professional, courteous, caring and cooperative attitude. 50. Is knowledgeable of Patients Rights and Psychiatric Mental Health Standards of Care and treats all patients with dignity and respect in a consistent, caring manner. 51. Understands the need for and maintains appropriate confidentiality at all time when interacting with patients, families, visitors and all other contacts. 52. Exhibits excellent customer relations skills as evidenced by supportive and constructive communication with all contacts including coworkers, patients, visitors, families and referral sources. 53. Utilizes as open, non-judgmental, non-discriminatory, professional and therapeutic approach to treatment with all patients. 54. Demonstrates professional behavior and interpersonal skills reflective of The Pavilion’s mission statement and philosophy. 55. Complies with hospital, departmental, safety and human resources policies. 56. Promotes a safe work environment for self, patients and co-workers by complying with environment of care, safety, infection control and standard precautions guidelines. 57. Maintains neat professional appearance and punctuality in accordance with hospital and departmental policies. 58. Maintains scheduling requirements, attendance and punctuality in accordance with hospital and departmental policies. 59. Follows unit assignment sheet completing assigned task designated by charge nurse and/or Lead MHT. 60. Understands the need for appropriate patient/staff boundaries and maintains a strict therapeutic relationship during active treatment. Discontinues communication with patients upon discharge. Informs supervisor of any patient contact after discharge. 61. Seeks out sources to address ethical concerns as they relate to patient care issues. 62. Actively integrates developmental age and growth theory into all aspects of patient care. 63. Demonstrates understanding of the patient’s role in the family systems and importance of the parent/guardian or legal obligation in the treatment process, when applicable. 64. Is aware of age-appropriate psychotropic medications and possible side effects. 65. Demonstrates basic familiarity of major psychiatric diagnosis relating to children, adolescent, adults and geriatrics. 66. Understands the need for limit setting, demonstrates competency in managing behavioral issues and utilizes age appropriate behavior modification techniques (i.e. children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics) in a consistent, caring manner. 67. Demonstrates knowledge of group dynamics and interactions specific to developmental needs of children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. 68. Uses age appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication.
