Description

This position is responsible for generating and producing weather content for all platforms—digital, television, radio and print. This position will develop plans, assign and create evergreen digital weather content for multiple Cox newspaper markets. This position serves as liaison for the weather department for other departments, including the sales team to develop weather content revenue opportunities.This position is like what an Executive Producer or Managing Editor is to a Television News Director.


Weather is a key driver of engagement for all our digital brands, and overseeing that weather content and identifying-seizing new opportunities with that content, is a big part of the Weather Team Leader’s daily responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitches and assigns weather team daily content for all platforms in the morning newsroom content meeting
  • Leads multi-market weather initiative for 4 Cox newspaper markets
  • Weather Initiative Team: This position is a member of the team of Managers, Directors, SVP’s, working to develop new revenue streams for CMGO around weather content. Developing sales and sponsorship opportunities around weather content for consideration by the sales department and potential clients
  • Special Weather Content—works with newsroom platform leadership to develop new digital, print, radio and television weather content
  • Daily Operations in Weather Dept—this position works dayside to oversee the daily operations in the weather department—troubleshooting, problem solving, tracking metrics to make sure the department is meeting its annual goals. Works with the leadership team to make certain the department is moving forward and being innovative in developing new weather content, revenue streams to benefit CMGO’s bottom line.
  • Degreed Broadcast Meteorologist—analyzes weather data from a variety of sources to develop a forecast for live television and radio newscasts, as well as live streams on our digital products and social media pages; must be an experienced live storm tracker, capable of uninterrupted, lengthy live broadcasts of tracking storms as they pass through our TV viewing area; ability to use all features of WSI Max system to prepare and deliver weather forecasts. 
  • The individual in this role may be assigned a weekly television newscast(s) and may fill in frequently during any newscast as a back-up meteorologist during leaves, holidays, etc.
  • Works with the Chief Meteorologist to handle weather department scheduling conflicts, emergencies, solutions 24-7
  • Liaison to newsroom managers of mobile products, works to troubleshoot, upgrade our digital weather mobile-wired products
  • Key point person for any department looking for weather information, needs of the department

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology; AMS CBM; 2 years live storm tracking experience.
  • Previous leadership position, leadership training, sales-business training highly desired
