Job Description


Provides direct care nursing services.  Assists Director of Nursing in supervising staff.   Must be available on an “on-call” basis for staff.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities, who are otherwise qualified, to perform the primary functions.

Manages Nurses and Mental Health Technicians. Must be knowledgeable of and abide by HIPAA regulations with regard to protected health information as defined by HIPAA and Cumberland Hall.  Uses and/or discloses on a daily basis verbal, written and/or electronic PHI in order to perform job duties, as pertains to (CLIENTS’ FINANCIAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, AND/OR CLINICAL DATA) and/or (EMPLOYEES’ FINANCIAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, AND/OR CLINICAL DATA).   Reports to the CNO. 

Supervises employees of the Nursing Units to ensure assigned duties are complete.

Stays within FTE guidelines established for the department.

Collaborates with HR Director regarding employee issues

Monitors employees’ performance on an ongoing basis, providing regular informal feedback on work quality and quantity and on conduct.

Interviews applicants, follow HR policies and procedures; recommends the best-suited candidate for selection while following guidelines regarding HR Smart and ACE testing procedures.

Communicates performance expectations to staff.

Conducts monthly staff meetings to communicate pertinent information.

Identifies training needs of department staff

Recommends changes or improvements of departmental operations to the Director of Nursing including unit/programming supplies

Oversees preparation of the four-week schedule.

Ensures that draft schedules are posted to the units at least 2 weeks in advance.  Finalized schedules are completed and posted at least 2 weeks in advance.

Effectively utilizes resource pool employees when scheduling to enhance continuity and efficiency of care.

Staffs the hospital according to acuity assuring the units are staffed appropriately and predicts and executes needed adjustments as they occur.

Accurately records all sick calls, tardiness, cancellations and absences by completing the “Absence Report” and submit to the Infection Control Nurse.

Assumes 24 hour responsibility for adequate staffing coverage.

Make daily rounds of the nursing units.

Attends treatment team meetings to provide nursing support to formulation of treatment plan.

Communicates and monitors appropriate care and discharge planning.

Monitors patients’ progress in compliance with treatment plan, making recommendations.  Problem solves and makes recommendations for continued care.

Addresses nursing issues as identified in incident reports or treatment team meetings with nursing staff on a monthly basis.  Reviews safety/risk management, infection control and incident reports for areas specific to units identifying and discussing trends with nursing staff.

Gathers/analyzes data from patient charts to identify areas of nursing improvement and trends and involvement in programming and core delivery and completes monthly PI report.  Follows-up with appropriate personnel if deficiencies are noted.

Maintains and develops positive clinical relationships with physicians.

Develops and implements a formal departmental orientation program, documenting each participant’s involvement process.  Adequately documents each new hire’s participation in orientation, in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.

Conducts performance evaluations and competencies timely as directed by HR and consistent with HR policy and in accordance with corporate service excellence expectations reviewing with each employee.

Job Requirements


Education:  Licensed Registered Nurse. Associates Degree prefer Bachelors


Experience:  Two years experience in mental health setting. 


Licenses/Certificates:  A Kentucky State Nursing License required.


Strong supervisory and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational and communication skills.
