The Ridge Behavioral Health System is seeking a dynamic and talented Mental Health Technician Program Coordinator. Located in Lexington, KY, the heart of the Bluegrass, The Ridge Behavioral Health System offers a healing environment that is reassuring to a patients’ sense of security and confidentiality. Dedicated to excellence, The Ridge Behavioral Health System is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, as a licensed, 110-bed hospital, providing psychiatric (mental health) and chemical dependency (drug & alcohol rehabilitation) services to children, adolescents and adults. Inpatient care is provided on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week. Outpatient and partial hospitalization services are provided on a six-day per week basis, days and evenings. Position Summary:


The Program Coordinator leads patient groups and collaborates with the Unit Charge RN to manage the unit milieu, and engages unit team to common goals.  This position conducts precaution and/or withdrawal checks on patients as assigned.  He/She ensures that the unit program is competently delivered by the MHA staff as well as training and orienting new MHA staff. Conducts clinical supervision audits as directed and ensures that the unit program rules are followed by patients and staff. 


Position Specific Competencies:


  • Assesses program materials for appropriate clinical content based on patient needs.

    Updates program content as needed & or as directed by the Nurse Manager/Director of Clinical Services.

    Communicates program needs to the Nurse Manager/Director of Clinical Services.

    Mentors new staff on unit and procedures, program materials, group dynamics and techniques.

    Completes program clinical supervision tool on all unit staff on a semi-annual basis.

    Flexes schedule to all shifts to ensure compliance of clinical program.  This change in schedule will occur at least once per quarter or at the direction of the Nurse Manager.

    Routinely evaluates the clinical content of the program to ensure patients’ needs are being met. Provides feedback to management on areas for needed improvement.

    Effectively establishes rapport with patients and families by adhering to the therapeutic boundaries policy.

    Adheres to the unit’s program philosophy and schedule.

    Provides clear and correct information to callers, visitors, and coworkers.

    Completes assignments such as:  chart filing, compiling chart binder, and maintaining chart order.

    Models assertive and respectful behavior.

    Applies natural and logical consequences.

    Applies basic limit setting with patients per CPI guidelines.

    Adheres to unit schedule when intervening with patients.

    Adheres to the unit’s level system when intervening with patients.

    Effectively uses Verbal De-escalation milieu management skills to quickly adapt to changing needs of the patients to create positive outcomes for all patients.

    Uses critical thinking skills to evaluate unit processes and correlate to patient needs, identifying areas of ongoing quality improvement.

    Consistently implements handbook & unit rules when intervening with patients.

    Ensures regular attendance & participation in program activities.

    Monitors and reviews staff performing observations, using opportunities to teach and improve on existing.

    Orients new admissions to the unit, rules, schedule, and level system.

    Consistently shares observations regarding specific behaviors, milieu concerns, & other relevant factors with other unit staff and Charge RN.

    Facilitates group activities tailored to the appropriate topic, age, and level of understanding as approved by the Program Coordinator.

    Assists with activities of daily living (ADL) as assigned.

    Ensures patients are consistently monitored in the proper location for the duration of activities.

    High risk behavior precautions are followed as per facility policy.

    Supports the enhancement of a patient’s self-esteem and responds in a therapeutic manner.

    Withdrawal checks are performed as ordered, accurately documented and findings reported to Charge RN.

    Assists with vital signs as assigned; demonstrates correct procedures; reports findings to the nurse.

    Follows proper NCI de-escalation techniques when handling crisis situations.

    Provides appropriate crisis intervention as necessary by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques to diffuse the situation, correctly prioritizing safety concerns.

    Uses appropriate counseling skills by de-escalating aggression, using active listening skills, using appropriate tone and volume of voice, providing a high frequency and variety of positive reinforcements, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture.

    Demonstrates proper procedures for therapeutic holds and seclusions.

    Contraband is properly removed and disposed of according to policy.

    Adherence and completion of precaution forms and policies.

    Documents group education notes accurately with sufficient depth of content, handwriting is legible, & reflects accurate information and adheres to documentation protocols and policies.

    Precaution forms are completed accurately and concurrently with patient behavior as ordered.  Documentation adheres to precautions policy.

    Progress notes are current, complete, legible, and reflect accurate objective information and adhere to documentation protocols and policies.

    Participates in shift report and accurately reports patient behaviors to Charge RN.

    Documents significant developments &/or changes in a patient’s behavior or condition promptly to the nurse and other team members as necessary.

    Documents & reports incidents immediately and according to policy.

    Reviews unit documentation, training for more positive outcomes on issues of need.

    Patient belongings are recorded accurately, labeled and stored safely per policy.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or some college course work required


  • Two years experience at The Ridge preferred
  • Four years relevant behavioral health experience may be accepted in lieu of experience at The Ridge
  • Inpatient psych or hospital experience preferred


  • Handle with Care certification and CPR required.  These trainings also offered upon hire.
