Multimedia photojournalist

Multimedia photojournalists are key positions in the AJC’s drive to be the leader in breaking news and visual engagement in the Atlanta market. They respond with a strong sense of urgency, energy and creativity to optimize newsroom and/or user-generated content for audiences across print, digital products, and through partner relationships with radio and TV. They are the AJC’s “first responders” to breaking news and are able to skillfully use multimedia tools – still and video cameras, computer software, audio recorders/devices and mobile devices — to create compelling, holistic stories with visual impact that reach new and existing audiences.


60 % Create permanent visual images for an exceptionally wide range of newsroom products.

  • Shoot and edit video with tools such as dSLR  and GoPro cameras,  wireless lav mic setup, video and audio editing software. (Proficient with video editing and audio editing.)
  • Capture audio via iPhone, using the native audio recording app.

20% Create unique and local video and audio projects.

10% Able to build photo galleries and create (audio) slide shows with accurate and complete captions.

10% Develop and report stories. (Manage a blog, as needed.)


  • Develops and provides web-based multimedia content
  • Consistently initiates and executes new ideas to drive traffic and engagement.
  • Understanding of traditional film and digital photography and keeping up to date with industry trends, developments and new techniques
  • Develops expertise with software to digitally enhance images by, for example, changing emphasis, cropping pictures, or correcting minor faults.
  • Maintains all applicable media related equipment, facilities, and supplies.
  • Geo-tags photos when appropriate.
  • Seeks out appropriate photographic subjects and opportunities.
  • Engage/grow audience using social media and other digital formats.
  • Respond to metrics to engage/grow audience.
  • Displays solid news judgment and the photographic/multimedia skills to get the fastest and most compelling visuals for digital audience.
  • Monitor digital metrics to keep abreast of audience interests and drive traffic.
  • Able to work independently without significant direction or editing; generates quality photos for print and free and paid digital products.
  • Stays up-to-date on content trends as well as new technologies, seeking new tools to streamline production and help drive business. 
  • Able to quickly learn new digital technology to create and publish content. 
  • Uses time effectively and efficiently, producing an acceptable volume of work.
  • Stay current on news, pop culture and emerging trends.
  • Embraces convergence by working across online products, mobile platforms, print, radio and TV.
  • Collaborates with newsroom staff to create digital content and serve print needs.
  • Collaborates with advertising, marketing and other key departments at the AJC and COX properties for special visual or multimedia projects.


Requires a bachelor’s degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed, or equivalent in experience.

A minimum of three years of professional experience as a photographer, but minimum five years’ experience preferred.

  • Skilled on tools such as DSLR  and GoPro cameras,  wireless lav mic setup, video and audio editing software.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to multi-task
  • Must be a team player, able to collaborate across departments and roles
  • Must be technically proficient and able to file remotely on deadline
  • Have access to a car and comfortable working commuting regularly to assignments
  • Displays a strong sense of urgency, high energy and tenacity
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Knowledge of social media tools and able to use social media as a means for visual/multimedia storytelling
  • Handles assignments showing flexibility and adaptability
  • Understands research and able to distinguish related audience needs for free and subscriber products
  • Available for occasional extended travel on short notice
  • Skilled reporting for captioning and reporting from scenes
  • Must be willing to work one day on the weekend
  • Portfolio or work product must be provided to be considered for this position
