Optum’s Complex Care Management platform addresses the needs of the most vulnerable seniors and disabled persons including those with multiple chronic illnesses, those who are permanently institutionalized, those with chronic pain or at the end of their lives, dual eligibles who are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and those who are transitioning across various levels of care.


The National Medical Director, Post-Acute Care is a newly created role that will work across the Optum enterprise with focus on evolving and expanding the post-acute care model and oversight and support for the ongoing clinical operational processes.  The creation of this role is to have more direct immersion and involvement at the product level with the entire spectrum of Post-Acute care.  The business growth will include targeting patient care such as: transition to Nursing Homes, Transition to Home with community based services, Inpatient Rehab, and LTACHs, with goal of moving towards more vale based care arrangements and assumption of various levels of risk.


This role will interface with Post-Acute Business Operations & Strategy staff to enhance products as well as Regional Medical Directors, Regional Clinical VPs, Regional Presidents, market based Medical Directors and other market leadership as this product area growth evolves.  Additionally this individual will work cross-functionally with provider relations, networks, contracting, etc.  


This Medical Director will travel up to 40-50% nationally working with colleagues on the development of strategy and the clinical model required for post-acute care.  They will function as a thought leader and decision maker addressing stake holders –i.e. Nursing Homes, Post-Acute Provider groups and develop relationships with national NH chains.  There will also be accountability to interact with external vendors, Home Health agencies and other community based service providers, and external Physician provider groups.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO

  • Board certified in ABMS specialty

  • 5+ years of experience with one or more of the following: post-acute care continuum including SNF, Inpatient Rehab, LTACH, and Home Health

  • 5 years of experience in direct medical care of high risk populations requiring additional care and support after hospitalization

  • Experience in care coordination program design for high risk post-acute populations

  • 2+ years of experience in medical management and utilization management

  • 5 years leadership within a healthcare organization

  • 2+ years of experience in role as an influential leader with other papa tts  hhealth

  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with cross functional teams

  • Prior involvement in strategic planning and implementation in Post-acute Care

  • Ability to travel 40+% as needed

  • Managed care experience
