Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health, founded in 1986, is an 82 bed facility within the city of Norfolk, Virginia. Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health offers comprehensive mental health programs in Virginia. We are a Universal Health Services facility that provides psychiatrically and medically managed acute, residential treatment, and partial hospitalization for children and adolescents with significant impairments in their social and emotional development.

We provide quality care to children and adolescents in need using quality, evidence based practice treatments. We are accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), and are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is seeking a dynamic and talented Night Shift Nurse Supervisor.

Position Scope:               


Provides leadership to the Patient Care Staff and supervises clinical operations to ensure continuity of quality patient care.  Ensures 24-hour coverage by patient care staff on assigned units.  Ensures consistent use of the nursing and patient care process in providing quality care and acts as a resource to all nursing and direct care staff.  Assists in training patient care staff.  Provides assessments, nursing care and evaluation of nursing care.  Collaborates with other department personnel in establishing and complying with patient care standards, policies, procedures and protocols.  Monitors utilization of resources to provide cost effective care.  Provides primary channels of communication for physicians, therapists, Director of Nursing, Nurse Managers and Administrators.  Serves as a role model for patients to observe and learn socially effective values, attitudes and behaviors.

Essential Functions:                 


  1. Respond to the emotional, social, and physical needs of the patient
  2. Ensure quality patient care
  3. Document patient information
  4. Staffs assigned units
  5. Provides leadership supervision for the infirmary and all assigned units
  6. Plans patient treatment
  7. Intervenes therapeutically with patients
  8. Intervenes with reposect to patient psychopharmacological and physiological needs
  9. Supports and interprets facility and department objectives and policies
  10. Models and promotes a culture of Service Excellence
Job Requirements

Qualifications:               Needs basic understanding of and comfort level with medical terminology, residential treatment, clinical science/pathology and psychiatric disorders.  Must know how to gather and analyze data.  Must be articulate, assertive, and able to communicate effectively with families, payers, therapists and physicians both verbally and in writing.  Must also demonstrate initiative, tact and good judgment.  Must be able to acquire clear understanding of treatment priorities and ability to make sound decisions balancing resident and family needs with available resources.  Must have basic computer skills.

Education:                     Graduation from an approved School of Nursing, which confers RN, AD, or Diploma in Nursing.

Licensure/ Certification: Licensed by Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse, BLS/CPR certification, or able to complete certification.   

Experience:                    One year psychiatric nursing experience preferred.  One year supervisory experience preferred.


Requirements:               Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

The incumbent must by physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent, mentally ill patients as necessary including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring, and pushing and pulling equipment, such as, wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds. Ability to perform CPR, First Aid, and the facility approved Crisis Intervention Procedures.
