Job Description

The Nurse Educator is a registered professional nurse who will facilitate orientation for all new staff, teaching and assessing many competencies and passing new staff off to mentors who will oversee the completion of the orientation competencies. Assist with formulation and implementation of training in areas identified as requiring follow-up and/or refresher education including annual competencies. Evaluates patient care through collaborative efforts with health team members in accordance with the nursing process and the standards of care and practices; addresses assessed needs with education programs when appropriate. Oversee Heathstream education for Nursing Department staff, uploading required education monthly for staff to complete. Carries out periodic inspections to ensure that procedures for the control of infections are being followed correctly. Collects and maintains statistical data of value in the identification and control of infections.

 

Leadership

  1. Ensure that all staff members deliver care in accordance with the Standards of Care and Practice.
  2. Assist in implementing unit policies and procedures, providing in-the-moment education as needed and serve as a resource to the staff.
  3. Review Infection Control, Safety and Risk Management policies and procedures on the units as the need is observed/identified. 
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment planning and offer education courses and/or in-the-moment education as it is determined necessary.
  5. Work with DON to provide education and training as identified in any roost cause analysis and/or intensive analysis. 
  6. Participate in performance improvement activities and assist each service in better understanding quality measures, process improvements and statistical relevance of data as needed.  Refer issues to the QM/RM department for more in-depth assistance as identified.

 

 

Personnel Management

  1. Continually evaluate the professional activities of the program staff and promote methods to improve identified areas.

  2. Assist in ensuring that all new employees are oriented to the program.

  3. Provide education, orientation and in-services for the program staff when deficits in clinical knowledge are identified

 

Teaching

  1. Promote learning experiences and provide educational materials to patients and their families.

  2. Provide staff with material to be used for patient education.

  3. Working with unit staff, evaluate the effectiveness of all patient teaching.

  4. Assist unit staff to identify opportunities for patients and families to question, discuss and explore their feelings about prescribed therapies/interventions/diagnosis.

  5. Develop a comprehensive nursing orientation for all new hires in both the classroom setting and in unit based skills competencies.

  6. In collaboration with Director of Human Resources develop a Preceptor Program for training and orientation of new staff hires.

  7. Develop monthly staff education calendar for ongoing education/supervision needs of nursing department staff.

  8. Plan and implement the monthly Healthstream education for all nursing staff.

  9. Organize and participate in ongoing education and re-enforcement of teaching skills, knowledge base and proficiency of existing and new skills.

  10. With assistance of the Director of PI/RM and DON, maintain ongoing knowledge of all regulatory and accrediting standards as they apply both to the facility.

  11. Develop core curriculum for Population Based Competencies for the unique needs of patient population groups.

  12. Assist with formulation and implementation of training in areas of multi-cultural awareness,

 

Performance

 1.  Provide supervision to the nursing staff and acts as a resource for hospital policies and procedures.

 2.  Attend annual in-service mandatory educational programs.

 3.  Participate in the Quality Improvement Program.

 4.  Comply with established measures for infection control, OSHA regulations and risk management.

 5.  Use time constructively and in an organized manner to accomplish assigned responsibilities, delegates duties to other personnel as appropriate, and demonstrates good judgment ability.

 7.  Demonstrate guest relations in communication, cooperation and in giving assistance to patients, physicians/licensed practitioners, coworkers and visitors in a prompt and courteous manner.

 8.  Prepares required reports in a timely manner.

 

Job Requirements

Education: Graduate from an accredited program of professional nursing required; MSN Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing preferred credentialing by ANCC.

Experience: A minimum of 2-5 years’ experience in a psychiatric health-care facility.  Preferred with 2 years of experience in a supervisory capacity at unit based level.  Preferred 2 years’ experience in acute medical nursing care environment.

Licensure: Currently licensed to practice by the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

Additional Requirements:  CPR certification.  Successful completion of Handle with Care. Successful completion of restraint and seclusion policy review as well as demonstration of proper use of manual holds and restraints.
