Job Description

Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services is the only freestanding, full-service psychiatric hospital in the Birmingham Area.  It draws on a rich tradition while staying on the cutting edge of new developments in treating psychiatric illness and enhancing mental health.  We treat mental illness, emotional problems, and adults with chemical dependency.

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible for the appearance of the unit.  Makes recommendations for its improvement.
  • Supervises nursing staff in carrying out nursing duties as assigned.
  • Ensures nursing intervention is on the treatment plan, and the plan is signed by the physician.
  • Assists in providing feedback regarding nursing staffing pattern for program that addresses continuity of care and acuity needs.
  • Participates in developing, interpreting, implementing, and maintaining nursing philosophy, objectives, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Facilitates collaboration between nursing and medical staff to provide quality care and also with procedures and physical exams
  • Supports, evaluates and promotes a positive, professional and therapeutic environment that protects patients’ rights.
  • Serves on Management Council and other committees as designated by DON.
  • Participates in staff development, orientation, training and education of new and current employees.
  • Assess patients’ physical needs and responds appropriately to crisis situations that decrease panic in disturbed patients.
  • Applies restraints or imposes seclusion in an emergency situation, follows policies and procedures, and documents efficiently.
  • Admits, discharges, and transfers patients based on physician’s orders.
  • Safely prepares, administers, documents and monitors results of medications.
  • Reviews medical records and physician orders for accuracy and completion.
  • Incorporates cost containment into nursing plans and their implementation. Monitors FTEs according to budgetary guidelines.
  • Participates in interdepartmental activities directed at improving communication, coordination, and quality patient care.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings 
  • Evaluates employees with Clinical Program Managers and House Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Investigates and follows-up on incidents, medication errors, and complaints from patients, personnel, and other departments, and reports to appropriate person.
  • Participates and is certified in CPI and CPR yearly.
  • Participates in the reporting and follow-up regarding employee and patient infection control issues in respective area.
  • Works effectively with other department heads, subordinates, supervisors, physicians, and other individuals.
  • Provides relief for  House Supervisors
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of the hospital including OSHA 29 C.F.R. Part 1910.1030 Blood-borne Pathogens, up to and including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of National Patient Safety Goals, and the policies and standards of accreditation entities including but not limited to Joint Commission, DMH, DHR, and CMS.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the theory and skills to reduce Seclusions/Restraints and other restrictive measures as well as physical, mental and emotional risk factors.
Job Requirements

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred and two years psychiatric nursing experience
  • Three years in psychiatric nursing management preferred
  • Current status in good standing as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama
  • New hire RN/LPN’s are required to attend 2 full weeks of New Employee Orientation on day shift, normally 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.Also additional training will be provided on the unit.

  • Must successfully pass background check and drug screen.
