Job Description

SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

Serves as an advanced practice nurse in the area of psychiatric mental health nursing working in both direct and indirect patient care activities.  Direct care functions include providing physical and psychiatric assessments, therapeutic interventions, and case management services.  Indirect care functions include assuming role as a consultant person and educator.  Prescriptive authority is accomplished through collaboration with a psychiatrist.

  10. Competent in assessing, planning, and delivering care for patients with co-occurring disorders.

     

Principle Job Functions and Responsibilities

  1. Provides individual, group and family therapy as needed.

  1. Serves as a consultant to the staff, providing education about psychiatric medication, psychiatric conditions and care giver interventions.
  2. Reviews relevant clinical studies, working to translate research findings into routine clinical practice.
  3. Provides education as needed to patients, families, and significant others.
  4. Provides case management services, coordinates all aspects of the treatment plan with other team members, patient, significant family members and other health services involved in treatment.
  5. Assumes teaching role in educational offerings.
  6. Provides crisis intervention as needed.
  7. Orders Labs and tests.
  8. Maintains and reviews patient medical services documents and records as necessary.

 

Responsibilities delegated by Psychiatrist:

  1. Formulating an appropriate diagnosis based on history, physical examination, and clinical findings.

  2. Ordering appropriate diagnostic tests.

  3. Prescribing pharmacologic agents.

  4. Providing information/education and obtaining informed consent for psychotropic medications.

  5. Prescribing non-pharmacologic therapies.

  6. Making appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies.

  7. Determining the effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of patient care outcomes.

  8. Reassessing and modifying the plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals.

  9. Assisting patient family to plan for home care, providing instructions on techniques and methods of home care.

  10. Participates in treatment planning, implementation and monitoring.

  11. Participating in Quality Improvement activities including systematic review of records and treatment plans.

  12. Ordering consultations.

  13. Dictating admission orders and discharge summaries.

  14. Other duties as required.

     

     

    Summary:

    Assures provision of nursing and medical care in accordance with the South Carolina Mental Health Code, accreditation standards, licensing rules and regulations, legal aspects, hospital policies/procedures, standards of care and practice.  Documents all clinical activities according to policy.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AT ENTRY:

Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license to practice in the state.  Maintains national certification in nurse practitioner specialty area. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to maintain confidentiality in regards to all information; skilled in flexibility, organizational, prioritization, and time management skills; crisis management skills; skills in analysis and evaluation; sound clinical judgment and decision-making; able to understand and apply applicable standards and regulations (e.g. The Joint Commission, CMS, DHEC, etc.).

 

1. Must be able to handle a wide range of emotional expression.

2. Work well with all levels of staff.

3. Work well with all clinical populations and pathologies.

4. Must be able to work independently as well as being part of a team.

5. Must be able to work well with multiple disciplines and treatment modalities.

6. Must be able to work well with multiple outside community systems.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOB:

 

College level reading and writing. Prolonged standing, walking or sitting are required.

 

Able to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.  Able to pick, pinch, type or otherwise work, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling, particularly that of fingertips.  Able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.  Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

 

Able to perceive the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 db loss @ Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without correction.  Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.

 

Work is light in nature, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or upon 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

 

 

Visual Acuity:  This is a minimum standard based on the criteria of accuracy and neatness of work.  Must be able to prepare and analyze data and figures, transcription, computer terminal, excessive reading, visual inspection at distances close to the eyes.

 

Willing to travel, including possible overnight travel, in work capacity.

 

The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

 

Must demonstrate self-control in potentially volatile, hostile, or combative situations; ability to meet deadlines; ability to work independently.

 

The worker is subject to second hand cigarette smoke from adult patients on occasions.

 

The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
