Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Applies and adjusts plaster casts and assembles and attaches orthopedic traction equipment and devices as directed by a physician. Sets up bed traction units or rigs special devices as required, and inspects and adjusts bandages and equipment. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Works under general supervision of physician. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Reports to Practice Administrator/Manager. JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES • Orthopedic technicians work directly with orthopedic doctors and surgeons in the treatment of bone and joint injuries. • Principally, orthopedic technology involves the application and removal of casts, splints and braces. • Orthopedic technician must also work with and instruct patients in caring for their injuries; understands and adjust traction equipment. • Must be able to adjust crutches, walkers and other aids and provide instructions to patients in their use. • Some orthopedic technicians also assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room, in the setting of broken bones and the fitting of prosthetic limbs. • Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include: checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures, charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information. • Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing charts to ensure information is completed and accurate. • Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include: setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records, ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms. • Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned which may include; respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly. • Calls patients on lab results and medication changes. • Assists doctors with admitting patients • Greets and registers patients in a prompt, pleasant, and helpful manner. Provides necessary instructions/directions. Informs appropriate department/person of patient’s arrival. • Verifies necessary information and records in the medical record. • Uses computer system to generate information necessary for billing. • Educates patients before and after procedures • Travels between facilities as requested • Other duties as assigned by management
