The Patient Access Intake RN reviews patients records to secure the appropriate scheduling of University of AZ Cancer Center (UACC) patients. Facilitate the patients’ medical and financial clearance using oncology nursing knowledge, clinical judgment and communication skills to resolve any barriers with scheduling or financial clearance of the patient. This position will be part of the Intake team offering clinical support to the team as necessary in identifying clinical needs of the patient.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Answer patient questions regarding care (e.g., medication, treatment) and benefits
  • Discuss patient care specifics with peers or providers involved in overall patient care and benefits
  • Leverage appropriate clinical terminology when communicating with physicians and other medical professionals
  • Provide summary clinical and ancillary information to plan Medical Director for review and decision making
  • Communicate clinical findings and present rationale for decisions to medical professionals and members at the appropriate level for understanding
  • Advocate with physicians and others for appropriate decisions (e.g., patient level of care changes) regarding patient betterment (e.g., care and service coverage, safety)
  • Comply with HIPAA guidelines related to Personal Health Information (PHI) when communicating with others.
  • Leverage experience and understanding of disease pathology (e.g., conditions, normal course of care for a condition) to review chart/clinical information, ask appropriate questions, and identify appropriate course of care in a given situation
  • Perform assessment that includes a review current and prior patient conditions (e.g., treatment history), documents and evaluations (e.g., discharge summaries), and relevant social and economic situations to identify patients' needs (e.g., level of care, referrals)
  • Research and identify information needed to perform assessment, respond to questions, or make recommendations (e.g., navigate Knowledge Library resources, and websites and databases such as FDA, National Cancer Center, NIH)
  • Interview patients/family members (e.g., ask questions, listen, mirror statements) or other providers to obtain information needed to make decisions (e.g., placement, level of care recommendations, etc.)
  • Identify inconsistencies or illogical information in patient responses, provider orders or patient history information and take appropriate action
  • professional judgment, take initiative to follow up, and manage conversations to make sound conclusions/recommendations regarding patient care or coverage
  • knowledge of pharmacological and clinical treatment protocol to determine appropriateness of care and instruct patients as needed
  • information about patient condition and benefit applicability/limitations of coverage to make recommendations
  • Collects complete and accurate financial data during intake process to ensure appropriate financial screening
  • knowledge of drug formularies covered by benefits in decision making
  • Work collaboratively with peers/team members and other levels or segments within scope Optum, UHC or UBH  (e.g., Case Managers, Field Care Advocates) to identify appropriate course of action (e.g., appropriate care, follow up course of action, make referral)
Required Qualifications:
  • Current, unrestricted RN license 
  • 4+ years of clinical RN experience and/or experience in utilization review
  • Experience in an oncology setting
  • Proficient in PC use, Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and working knowledge of hospital department computer systems
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Utilization review, insurance, case management or medical clearance in a provider practice, hospital or insurance setting.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
  • BSN
