Job Description

Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services is the only freestanding, full-service psychiatric hospital in the Birmingham Area.  It draws on a rich tradition while staying on the cutting edge of new developments in treating psychiatric illness and enhancing mental health.  We treat mental illness, emotional problems, and adults with chemical dependency.

Hill Crest BHS currently has a Patient - Family Education - PRN position available. This position leads specialized patient and family education groups, plus other duties as assigned, consistent with skills and credentials, on both acute and residential treatment units.


  • Provides care to patients in a manner that considers safety, patient rights, comfort and the therapeutic environment.

  • Observes patient behavior and notifies appropriate nursing staff of information.

  • Documents appropriate information in progress notes as assigned and as per policy and procedure.

  • Intervenes to decrease panic of disturbed patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

  • Serves as a role model for patients.

  • Utilizes the Master Treatment Plan to determine intervention with patients.

  • Completes rounds as assigned.

  • Always exhibits a positive attitude when dealing with others in day-to-day work situations.

  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned; regularly helps co-workers.

  • Comes to work in a timely manner and is willing to work overtime if needed.

  • Gathers and completes social history information efficiently and accurately and on assigned cases.

  • Identifies education needs of patients and families and tailors individual and group sessions to address these.

  • Provides patient and family education sessions and groups that motivate patients and families to participate and target positive coping skills and understanding of illness.

  • Identifies and reports to Program Director ethical and patient advocacy issues.Suggests resolutions.

Job Requirements


  • College degree in psychology or related field equivalent.

  • Graduate work in social work or counseling preferred.

  • Previous experience in dealing with the emotionally disturbed in an inpatient or out patient setting.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of normal growth and development for the population served.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of group leadership abilities
  • New hires are required to attend 1 full week of New Employee Orientation on day shift, normally 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

  • Must successfully pass background check and drug screen.
