Southwest Medical, part of OptumCare, is a multi-specialty group of physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants consisting of over 300 providers, 21 medical health centers including six urgent care clinics, four convenient care centers, two lifestyle centers catering to older adults, an outpatient surgery center, home health, hospice and palliative care services, plus E-visits and online options via Now Clinic telemedicine technology. The Pharmacist in this function perform various duties related to the fulfillment of prescription orders within a hospital setting.  

 Primary Responsibilities:
  • Review orders to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability
  • Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage
  • Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files, inventories, control records for radioactive nuclei, or registries of poisons, hazardous drugs, or controlled drugs
  • Maintain procedures for mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals, according to policy and legal requirements, to ensure quality, security, and proper disposal
  • Assess the identity, strength, and purity of medications
  • Collaborate with other health care professionals to plan, monitor, review, or evaluate the quality or effectiveness of drugs or drug regimens, providing advice on drug applications or characteristics
  • Order and purchase pharmaceutical supplies, medical supplies, or drugs, maintaining stock and storing and handling it properly
  • Analyze prescribing trends to monitor patient compliance and to prevent excessive usage or harmful interactions
  • Compound and dispense medications as prescribed by doctors, by calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, or oversee these activities
  • Fulfilling orders written specifically for pharmacy (i.e pharmacy to dose orders)
  • Participate in quality improvement programs, productivity projects, resource projects, educational programs and any other programs deemed necessary to improve the quality of patient care or increase Southwest Medical Pharmacy productivity
  • Develop and provide nursing and physician education as deemed necessary
  • Communicate with other pharmacists, nursing and physicians to resolve and clarify discrepancies and medication orders throughout the facility
  • Follow automatic substitution policies, implement formulary and follow all facility policy and procedures
  • Exercise positive customer service and communication skills with contracted facility, Southwest Medical Pharmacy and with other contracted and UHG staff
