Henderson Hospital
Henderson Hospital is a member of The Valley Health System, a network of six acute care hospitals that provide care for patients throughout Southern Nevada and nearby communities. Located in the suburb of Henderson, the 120-bed hospital, which opened in 2016, offers emergency care, surgical services, including an ambulatory surgery center, cardiovascular care, women’s health and maternity services. A level II neonatal intensive care unit is slated to open by late 2017.


Job Description

Pharmacist Interns, under the supervision of a license pharmacist, assist in the various activities of the pharmacy department. Pharmacist Interns assist the pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of records. Pharmacist Interns function in accordance with standard written procedures, guidelines and state and federal regulations. Interns will be allowed to process orders but the orders must be validated by a pharmacist before dispensing. Pharmacy interns will be allowed to answer drug information questions but must have the answer verified by a pharmacist before they can dispense the information. Pharmacy interns are allowed to give patients counseling regarding instructions on how to use their medication, expected side effects and general precautions as well as interview patients to obtain further clarification regarding medication use. Pharmacy interns will assist when needed to perform MUE on patient charts when needed.  


Pharmacy interns will be allowed to take clarifications and verbal orders from physicians and must perform the read back function as per hospital protocol for all telephone orders from physicians. The intern position includes being able to perform all the duties expected of a pharmacy technician interns will be expected to cover the same shifts. The intern will participate in continuing education with the pharmacists as time permits. All work performed by a pharmacy technician must be supervised by a pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.                                                                                                                                                                                                                 


 Essential Job Duties:

Procures and distributes drug orders per physician request, pharmacist request of prearranged work assignment within specified time frame. Has all work checked by a registered pharmacist prior to leaving the pharmacy.
Maintains awareness of developments in pharmacy and healthcare that relate to job responsibilities and integrates them into their practice. 
Maintains a working knowledge of all aspects in pharmacy services, including but not limited to: Drug names and classification, medication order and prescription interpretation, prescription computer order entry, pharmaceutical calculations.
Maintains a working knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy department. This includes but is not limited to, identifying medications that are light sensitive, requires refrigeration, are caustic, or poisonous.  
Carries out the calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solutions preparation using weight and volume equivalents in both the metric and apothecary systems and has a registered pharmacist check prior to use for preparation of product.
Interacts effectively with other members of the healthcare team on a regular basis. Maintains attentiveness to the rights of patients. Maintain confidentiality of patient information.       
Operates automatic technology, under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, automated dispensing cabinets, computers, unit dose machines, etc.) in accordance to policy, procedures, and manufacturer’s instructions.          
Issues controlled substances, under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, to patient care areas and maintains records as required by law.              
Performs the essential functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory control as needed       
Participates in continuing education programs, meeting, training programs and related activities.       
Participates in the quality improvement and medication use review activities of the department. Collects data, conducts inspections and maintains logs and other documentation as assigned.       
Participates in the development and presentation of orientation, education and training programs for new employees.
Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, and fire and infection control. Complies with all applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations.
Department Specific Requirements     
Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, objectives, safety and infection control standards sufficient to be able to maintain the expected level of efficiency.            
Knowledge of sanitary and safety standards sufficient to be able to manufacture and work safely with pharmaceutical substances.         
Effectively works with vendors             
Maintains compliance with federal and state regulatory rules as appropriate.        
Understands operational functions of department and relationship with corporate and understands how own role is part of overall operation.  
Maintains current, accurate knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, benefits, and practices.       
Effectively communicates to other departments, administration, vendors and staff in layman terms so that complex technical issues are understood by them  
Maintains department in neat and organized condition.
Maintains appropriate inventory and documentation     
Classification Specific Requirements    
Helps maintain department in a neat and organized condition.    
Demonstrates and takes a team effort in helping the department reach goals and meet deadlines.       
Helps out in other areas when needed.
Ensures proper filing, typing and organization of all paperwork.  
Demonstrates ability by performing assignments independently without close supervision.
Adjusts appropriately to volume of work to complete tasks in a timely manner, without interfering with quality of work.           
Responds well to instruction and training, applying new knowledge to duties.       
Makes suggestions/recommendations for improved operations to the department, facility.
Effectively communicates both orally and in writing.       

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:


Education: High School graduate or equivalent.                                                                                                                                               

Experience: One year (1) experience in hospital setting preferred.                                                                                                                                             

Technical Skills: Automation experience with knowledge of reporting features (i.e., optimization, load/unload, nursing narcotic access, etc.)                                                                                                                                        

License/Certification: Current license as Pharmacist Intern in State of Nevada                                                             

Other: Current enrollment and in good standing in an accredited school of pharmacy
