Southwest Medical, part of OptumCare, is a multi-specialty group of physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants consisting of over 300 providers, 21 medical health centers including six urgent care clinics, four convenient care centers, two lifestyle centers catering to older adults, an outpatient surgery center, home health, hospice and palliative care services, plus E-visits and online options via Now Clinic telemedicine technology. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for answering incoming calls/completing outbound calls to/from patients, physicians and pharmacists while ensuring a high level of customer service and maximizing productivity. Must have ability to accurately fill, compound and prepare medications based on medication labels. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. Knowledge of laws, legal codes, government regulations and requirements of oversight committees such as Joint Commission and CMS that apply to pharmacy. Capability to effectively utilize pharmacy technology and computer systems to complete pharmacy tasks. Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Good verbal and written communication skills are required. Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Talking to others to convey information effectively. Managing one's own time and the time of others.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Entering prescriptions and verifying appropriate information
  • Contacting patients, pharmacists and doctor's offices to resolve claims issues
  • Processing prescriptions (from intake to order completion)
  • Resolving customer issues; ensuring accurate information is provided
  • Constantly meet established productivity, schedule adherence, and quality standards while maintaining a good attendance record
  • Receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate
  • Prepack bulk medicines, fill bottles with prescribed medications, and type and affix labels
  • Answer telephones, responding to questions or requests
  • Maintain proper storage and security conditions for drugs
  • Assist customers by answering simple questions, locating items, or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information
  • Price and file prescriptions that have been filled
  • Establish or maintain patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients
  • Order, label, and count stock of medications, chemicals, or supplies and enter inventory data into computer
  • Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, check for outdated medications in current inventory, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
  • Mix pharmaceutical preparations, according to written prescriptions
  • Participate in quality improvement programs, productivity projects, resource projects, educational programs and any other programs deemed necessary to improve the quality of patient care or increase Southwest Medical Pharmacy productivity
  • Develop and provide nursing and physician education as deemed necessary
  • Order and purchase pharmaceutical supplies, medical supplies, or drugs, maintaining stock and storing and handling it properly
  • Follow automatic substitution policies, implement formulary and follow all facility policy and procedures
  • Exercise positive customer service and communication skills with contracted facility, Southwest Medical Pharmacy and with other contracted and UHG staff
