Job Description

Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor this position obtains blood samples for lab testing purposes. Clerical duties associated with charting and paper work. Performs some tests under supervision of medical technologists. Retrieves and distributes reports according to procedure. This position also requires the use of your own vehicle, either as a courier or to do phlebotomy at other locations. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Corona Regional Medical Center. It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values. The employee shall support Corona Regional Medical Center strategic plan and the goals and direction of the performance improvement plan.

 

 Essential Job Duties:

Performs venipuncture and capillary collections using established Laboratory procedures and as appropriate for the age of the patient.

Explains the procedures in terms that are understandable and appropriate for the age of the patient and/or family member.

Follows physician's orders and able to follow through when there are questions.

Understands the billing system and uses test charge codes accurately.

Properly identifies patients and documents correct information on all secondary specimen containers.

Demonstrates knowledge of anticoagulants and preservatives.

Makes certain that the quality, quantity and/or volume of specimens meet the test requirements.

Prepares specimens for reference laboratories according to protocol.

Documents and communicates significant information and special occurrences which may affect test results.

Demonstrates knowledge of report retrieval and distribution. Distributes report slips accordingly as in charting inpatient reports and in preparing the mail for the physicians.

Enters patient data and test codes accurately and according to protocol. Observes and documents quality control procedures done.

Ability to process outpatient specimens.

Set-up microbiological samples for culture in an accurate and timely manner.

Receives and distributes samples delivered to the Lab in an accurate and timely manner.

Ensures completion of orders by reviewing work center pending logs in a timely manner.

Follows the computer usage policy by using assigned user code. Uses the computer for department data according to the limitation levels established by the computer usage policy.

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM ESSENTIAL EDUCATION

Associate degree in Science or MLT (ASCP) preferred.

REQUIRED LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONS

Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) required.

Current BCLS (CPR) certificate required.

Current California driver's license and vehicle insurance required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Exposure to solvents, chemicals, and cleaning solutions as applied to departmental MSDS sheet.

Must use personal protective equipment/devices to avoid direct contact with blood and body fluids, sharps, chemicals, etc. as they apply to each department.
