Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital (BGBH), a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS), is located on an 11-acre campus in picturesque Fort Washington, Pa., a small suburban town of Philadelphia. Our 146-bed facility provides a safe and comfortable environment for patients suffering from mental illness and behavioral disorders.

The Physician Assistant will be required to exercise sound professional judgment while providing psychiatric health care to patients who are being or have been admitted to the hospital.  Patient assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic interventions will be carried out in close association and collaboration with the hospital physicians and other members of the psychiatric treatment team.  The Physician Assistant will perform duties as follows:

  • Provide history and physical examinations to all patients being admitted within 24 hours of admission
  • Initiate requests for commonly performed lab studies as required.
  • Identify normal and abnormal findings in history and physical exam and lab studies and note them on the H & P.
  • Perform psychiatric evaluations and assessments as required.
  • Screen patients to determine need for medical attention.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic studies and order consultations as needed.
  • Perform basic clinical procedures such as electrocardiogram, care and suture of minor lacerations; application of bandages and dressings and removal of superficial foreign bodies as required.
  • Prescribe and dispense drugs as outlined in Written Agreement with Supervising Physician.
  • Perform CPR when necessary.
  • Assist in investigations of sexual related allegations as required.
  • Provide counseling and instruction regarding common patient medical problems.
  • Consult on complex cases and those that require medical interventions.
  • Work closely with hospital pharmacist in providing patient education on psychotropics.
  • Educate nurses to recognize and intervene on medical conditions.
  • Provide coverage in Admissions area when requested.
  • Work collaboratively with the psychology department in providing neuro-psych testing for organicity and early dementia.
Job Requirements

Education:                  Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program is

Required; passing of NCCPA exam and current NCCPA certification

 

Experience:                A minimum of three (3) years experience as a PA in a psychiatric health facility preferred.

 

Licensure:                   Active PA state license required.  Current DEA registration            

 

 

Additional Requirements:  Must demonstrate professional accountability.  Will practice and

Support established policies and procedures, perform assessment, determine diagnosis and

implement therapeutic approaches to a psychiatric population, communicate promptly with

hospital supervisor when problems are identified and collaborate and consult with physicians

regarding provision of care to patients.  Current certification in CPR and CPI required.
