POSITION SUMMARY:

This correspondent is charged with developing and writing stories about state government, state issues and politics. This reporter will work with a team of reporters at the state Capitol in writing for ajc.com, myajc.com, a political vertical and print. During the three-month legislative session, the correspondent will be responsible for covering the day-to-day goings on in the House or Senate, with the help of other correspondents and state government editors. When the General Assembly is not in session, this correspondent will focus on state agencies and topics including state environmental news.

A successful applicant will be adept at swiftly filing breaking news, executing step-back stories on important state issues and digging deep on watchdog coverage of Georgia’s government and elected officials. In all cases, the reporter must be able to clearly show what government action means to readers.

At its most effective, this correspondent’s work will achieve tangible, positive results on behalf of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s readers.

The reporter must be able to establish a large network of agency and community contacts in order to ensure awareness of those issues that resonate with our audience. The correspondent must be able to quickly become an expert on the issues she or he covers, writing with authority on a wide range of issues, from environmental spills to changes in welfare policies, from state legislative primaries and agriculture trends to religious liberty and gun laws. This correspondent must be able to produce clean, organized publication-ready content with a minimum of supervision. He or she must be able to handle various distribution outlets such as social, ajc.com and myajc.com, and must be able to use a variety of storytelling tools including video, data, and other narrative elements and emerging digital-only formats.

The position also requires that he/she be comfortable with metrics and audience development strategies.

This correspondent must collaborate across the newsroom and across topics, with other reporters on the state government team, as well as reporters whose primary topics are social services, criminal justice, transportation, business, etc.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Identifies, reports and produces news and enterprise on a variety of political topics
  • Serves multiple platforms and audiences. Digital proficiency is key.
  • Pivots from breaking news to deep enterprise for print and paying audiences; can compile a clean and complete breaking news report while juggling reporting on a longer-term trend or enterprise story.
  • Works semi-independently; Sets news priorities and work activities in keeping with mission but does not require extensive assignment consultation to know what is the best use of time.
  • Generates clean and concise copy that does not need extensive editing.
  • Generates work that is fair, balanced and accurate.
  • Produces work beyond the traditional print news article format: Video, photos, emerging digital formats.
  • Consistently meets deadlines set for digital and print needs.
  • Handles other assignments when needed, showing flexibility and adaptability.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Journalism Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent in experience.

 
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum three years’ experience covering government; five years of experience preferred.
  • Displays a clear ability to develop strong, reader-focused story ideas and write about complex concepts with clarity and authority.
  • Fluent in the use of government records and the state and federal open records acts.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and database programs a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to be highly organized and, when warranted, manage and juggle multiple stories simultaneously.
  • Must have strong skills in communicating and collaborating with editors and colleagues.
  • Capacity to shoot own photographs when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in digital media, providing searchable data for Web readers, etc.
  • Demonstrated mastery of the craft. Must provide work samples with your application to be considered for this position (no more than 7, please).
