*Role Description*

*Leads team(s) progressing projects from inception to the clinic (FIH)*Accountable for making appropriate, nimble scientific & investment decisions for projects*Provides strong cross-line leadership to deliver the RU strategy whose science has been endorsed (by internal governance) and for which discrete spend has been approved by the CSO (and/or RU Leadership team)*Ensures smooth handover of projects to clinical project lead


*Leads each project in accord with the ethos & urgency of the I&I unit (eg invites scientific peer review, addresses CIR/CIS as appropriate, ensures the project delivers molecules that survive, maximizes competitiveness, minimizes cost-to-know, maximizes value) *Accountable for definition of a high quality project plan and delivery of high quality project milestones on schedule and budget *Provides strong scientific leadership, balancing pragmatism and innovation consistent with the Research strategy.*Recommends and enacts the right level of early project investment at risk (particularly DSRD, Pharm Sci and clinical) to enable smooth progression to the clinic for the "right" projects *Partners with lines to prioritize and resolve resourcing issues in constrained areas *Contributes to RPL community through sharing best-practice and may mentor and coach other RPLs as required*Creates, leads and delivers continuous improvement of the Research process and improves productivity within each phase*Creates and leads a motivated, committed and engaged project team. Models and expects effective team behavior to achieve the project goals


*Doctoral level degree or equivalent with at least 10 years industry experience*Proven track record of project advancement and delivery in the pharmaceutical industry*Experience in small molecule and biologic therapeutic modalities*Strong working knowledge of medical practice, diseases and biology relevant to the TA*Experience of providing scientific leadership for projects in the pharmaceutical industry via a range of appropriate delivery routes*Record of delivery of discipline-relevant data in support of novel targets and programs that have advanced towards the clinic*Demonstrated innovation and the ability to apply knowledge, techniques and skills to identify new drug targets*Acknowledged internally and externally as a scientific leader in the Biology discipline of the team
