A Mental Health Associate is a member of the front-line staff who works directly with our patients, always keeping three goals in mind: Safety, Consistency, and Education. The ideal Mental Health Associate has a compassionate heart for those who are experiencing an acute psychiatric issue or crisis and want to make a difference in their lives.

We currently are recruiting for various shifts in a full-time part-time position. Mental Health Associates are required to work every other weekend.

Paid training, excellent benefits, and more are provided, with on-going education a priority.

 

POSITION SUMMARY
Provides routine non-acute physical care, for the patient, as well as, educational groups based on needs identified in the Master Treatment Plan.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Follows program schedule with minimal supervision. Follows program rules and guidelines and ensures patient compliance with same.

Is courteous and professional to patients, family members and significant others.

Completes patient procedures accurately and within time frame as specified by hospital policy.

Completes required documentation specific to position in a clear and concise manner. Documentation shows understanding of patient and unit goals.

Attends scheduled hospital in-services and completes staff education attendance record. Reads and initials articles that are posted on unit. Seeks opportunities for education and professional growth.

Practices good hand-washing techniques, follows Universal Precautions.

Alerts supervisors to risk management and quality concerns.

Dresses appropriately to position.

Flexible and positive in accepting responsibility for patients leisure time and maintaining a ,therapeutic milieu. Shows creativity in planning patients’ free time. Is involved and physically active in all aspects of patients program.

Checks with RN prior to and at end of shift for report and direction. Communicates observations clearly and alerts RN to pertinent and/or high risk changes in patient conditions.

Displays consistency and is positive in interactions with others. Accepts criticism and suggestions. Maintains safe boundaries with patients and co-workers, uses self disclosure conservatively.

Willingly serves as preceptor to new employees and role-models positive images.

MHA III- Participates in planning skill groups and facilitates groups as assigned. Has necessary materials available. Groups begin and end on time. Pertinent information is clearly communicated to the unit RN.

MHA II – Facilitates educational groups with skills development focus. Has necessary materials available. Groups begin and end on time. Pertinent information is clearly communicated to the unit RN.

MHA I- Facilitate activity focused program groups. Has necessary materials available. Groups begin and end on time. Pertinent information is clearly communicated to the unit RN. Demonstrates and teaches good sportsmanship.

Incorporates service specific knowledge (child, adolescent, sexually reactive children, sex offender, or dual diagnosis/chemical dependency) into daily activities.

Utilizes developmental and program specific knowledge in the delivery of patient care.

Has sound understanding of mental health and program specific issues.

Understand and demonstrates the ability to prioritize the patient’s needs according to the treatment plan.

Facilitates groups as assigned demonstrating understanding of group process and the disease concepts of each specific diagnosis group.

Maintains up to date CPR certification.

Willingly accepts additional responsibilities outside routine job functions.

Will adhere to all safety policies and safe work practice.

Will attend hospital safety trainings.

Will adhere to all hospital policies and procedures.

Will report all accidents immediately.

The above are essential job functions.

 

SHIFT INFORMATION

First shift starts at 630am and ends at 300pm

Second shift starts at 230pm and ends at 1100pm

Third shift starts at 1030pm and ends at 700am

 
Requirements

Education:

At least 45 credit hours completed in continuing undergraduate study in Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, Counseling or a related field or completion of a related vocational/technical degree program. Prefer Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, sociology, education, or a related field of a Technical degree in areas of allied health. Years of experience in a related field may substitute for credit hours requirement.

Experience:

Prefer 1 to 2 years of prior psychiatric/mental health experience.

Licensure:

None

Knowledge:

Knowledge of human behavior or principles of psychology preferred including therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting and crisis and behavior management.
