Job Description

:Lighthouse Behavioral Health Hospital is an acute inpatient psychiatric hospital serving children, adolescents and adults.  Lighthouse also provides care for adults with substance abuse.  Lighthouse is owned and operated by UHS.  We are JCAHO accredited.  Lighthouse is located only a few miles from the beach, boardwalk, restaurants and entertainment offered at Myrtle Beach.  We are currently recruiting for a full-time certified Recreation Therapist.  Listed below is a job summary and responsibilities: 

Job Summary: Perform responsible professional work in the evaluation and implementation of therapeutic recreation programs designed to increase, maintain or restore physical and mental health function as directed by the physician. The individual is responsible for assisting patients in reaching their maximum performance levels in the areas of leisure, adaptive and recreational activities. Responsible for working with a team in the delivery of care and participates in educational experiences for interns. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:     

 

1.     Evaluate, plan and implement patient care programs through the utilization of selected therapeutic recreation procedures.   Evaluation and treatment are performed within the context of the person’s lifestyle, mental health and developmental changes occurring throughout the lifespan.

2.     Evaluate patients which include collection of background information and performing evaluations that are thorough and appropriate to the patient and accomplished within the first 72 hours of a patient’s stay.

3.     Develop treatment plan based on evaluation findings and other relevant data gathered through treatment team that includes appropriate short and long term goals.

4.     Provides orientation to recreation therapy for patients by conducting groups in recreation therapy and based on the population of the group.

5.     Implement treatment activities and makes modification based on patient’s response.

6.      Perform discharge evaluation and works with team members to assure adequate home programs and follow-up care will be provided.

7.     Develop unit and group therapeutic activities in conjunction with other disciplines.

8.     Conduct individual and group activities effectively with regard to: space utilization, appropriate selection/utilization of materials, modification of activities to promote self-esteem and enhance outcomes.  Uses sound clinical judgment in selection of patients to participate in group activities.

9.     Takes the time to plan the activities in advance in order to allow for effective introduction, the activity and closure.   Assures the scheduling is done effectively on the weekends, in the evenings and in conjunction with approved off-campus activities.

10. Promotes the milieu of the unit. Intervenes effectively with patients who behave inappropriately or who are having difficulty coping, including crisis intervention.

11. Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

12. Seeks and participates in professional development and hospital required educational programs.

13. Provides clinical learning opportunities for interns.

14. Participates in department CQI activities and gathers statistical data as required.

15.  Maintains required departmental records.

16. Monitors equipment and supplies and orders what is needed while remaining within the department’s assigned budgets.

 

Job Requirements

:Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation from an accredited university.

Experience: Prefer experience working within mental health or an acute care setting.

Licensure/Certifications: Active certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
