Job Description

Laurel Heights Hospital located in Atlanta Georgia has a RECREATION THERAPIST (Part-time) opportunity. Laurel Heights Hospital is an intensive Residential Treatment/Acute and Autism Spectrum Disorders Program for children and adolescents.
We serve and treat severe and complex psychiatric and behavioral difficulties and co-occurring psychiatric issues. We provide a caring, therapeutic setting with various therapeutic modalities and applied behavior analysis services. EOE.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATION AT ENTRY:

Bachelor degree in Therapeutic Recreation from accredited program.  Experience working with behaviorally disordered children/adolescents, preferably those with an Autism Spectrum Disorders or related developmentally disabled.  CRTS or eligible to obtain certification within 1 year of employment.  Ability to plan goal oriented therapeutic recreation activities and function as member of multi-disciplinary team; ability to lead and provide hands-on facilitation for groups;  skill in assessing motor skills, cognition, and social functioning; ability to develop measurable treatment goals pertaining to need areas;  possesses physical endurance and stamina;  able to obtain lifeguard certification with 1 year of employment if necessary.  College level reading and writing skills; proficiency in oral and written communication; firm knowledge of medical and psychiatric terminology; skills in dealing courteously with public and other staff within organization; firm knowledge of human behavior or principles of psychology; skills in prioritizing and managing time; problem-solving abilities; use of appropriate social skills, including role modeling and respect for staff and children; empathy toward children and  adolescents; firm knowledge of  child growth and development; skills in limit-setting necessary; ability to supervise Mental Health Associates/Residential Instructors within groups; practice of therapeutic/professional boundaries; willingness to seek/accept supervision.  Employee must have a valid Georgia Driver's License.

 

 

LEVEL OF READING AND WRITING REQUIRED FOR JOB:

Reading and writing consistent with College level.  Must have advanced knowledge of medical terminology.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situations such as being verbally or physically confronted in a threatening or aggressive manner; must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions such as noise, conversation and foot traffic; ability to handle interruptions often and be able to move from one task to another; must be flexible and not easily frustrated in dealing with differences of opinions.

 

Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and be able to perceive the attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, and/or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.  Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word during activities in which they must convey detail or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly.  Hearing to perceive the nature of sound with no less than 40 LB loss @ Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without correction; ability to perceive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.  Perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands and fingers.

 

Individual must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and to be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction that will enable people in the role to complete administrative and clerical tasks and visually observe patients on the unit and in therapeutic activities.  While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.

 

VISUAL ACUITY (MACHINE OPERATORS, INSPECTIONM CLOSE ASSEMBLY, CLERICAL, ADMINISTRATIVE):

This is a minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, excessive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines (including inspect), using measurement devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

 

PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS AND HAZARDS:

The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as is typical office or administrative work).
