Job Description

The Recreational Therapist plans, organizes, implements, evaluates, and documents experiential learning and recreational activities for psychiatric inpatient children (ages 4-12) and adolescents (12-17) designed to address issues identified in the patient’s treatment plan.  Focuses on helping patients improve physical, cognitive and social/emotional functioning; facilitating an optimal level of personal independence and enhancing psychological growth and development.  The Activity Specialist provides clinical guidance and education to direct care workers regarding unit activities, and provides assistance with milieu management, structure and patient supervision to unit staff when not leading scheduled activities.

Performs position specific job functions within professional standards.  Completes position responsibilities by following established guidelines and protocols within appropriate time frames.  Responsible for assessment, development, and implementation of treatment goals for patients.  Plans and coordinates creative and stimulating experiential activities to meet patient needs with team, agency and outside service providers.  Leads group recreational activities (e.g., sports, arts and crafts, new games, leisure skill classes, special events).  Adapts activities as needed to enable individuals with disabilities to participate (e.g., adapted aquatics, social groups for people needing social skills).  Provides timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of patient behavior, treatment planning, individualized interventions and patient progress.  Makes appropriate recommendations relevant to transitions in treatment and discharge. 

Job Requirements

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of experiential therapy. Able to plan, organize, and implement recreational activities, social skills, coping skills, and rehabilitation groups..

  • Effectively communicates (both verbal and written skills) patient status, and treatment needs to clients, families, professionals, and employees of the facility. Able to verbally adapt spoken communication to meet needs of patient. Maintain confidentiality. Able to verbally adapt spoken communication to meet needs of patient. 

  • Proficiency in facilitating recreational activities and experiential therapy groups.Able to safely de-escalate and manage aggressive patients, to oversee seclusion and physical restraint of patients per policy. Able to handle multiple projects under deadlines with short notice.

  • Maintains professional therapeutic relationships with staff, patients, families and visitors. Able to maintain patient confidentiality.

  • Word processing and basic programs; drafting individualized treatment plans. Accurately conveys patient behavior and status verbally and in writing..

  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work activities. Able to effectively present information to employees, management and public groups.  Maintains professional therapeutic relationships with staff, patients, families and visitors.

  • Proficiency in facilitating individual and group therapy sessions.Able to safely de-escalate aggressive patients. Coordinates multiple tasks efficiently.

     

Education/Training:

Bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy or recreation management.

 

Licensure/Certification:

  • Required: Current certification or eligible for certification as a CTRS.

  • Current Oklahoma Driver’s License (Required for staff on Driver’s List).  Good Driving Record

     

    Experience:

    Prefer two + years experience leading recreational activities in a psychiatric treatment setting with children and/or adolescents.

     

    Physical/General:

Must be at least 21 years of age.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Physical strength necessary to implement patient behavioral crisis intervention.  Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping as required to assist in patient care. Able to sustain physical activity eight hours a day and remain on feet eight hours per day.  Able to lift, carry, and lower up to 35 pounds using appropriate body mechanics. Able to push patients in wheel chairs up and down hills and pursue running patients.  Hearing, vision, sensory, and emotional stability sufficient to perform essential job functions.  Able to deal with stressful situations and changing priorities.  Works for sustained periods of time maintaining concentrated attention to detail.  Access to reliable transportation; maintains reliable attendance record and arrives in a timely manner.
