Job Description

The Recreation Therapist is responsible for planning and implementing activity services for assigned program, which involves defining and implementing treatment goals as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and providing continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients.


  1. Demonstrate responsibility for observation and application of sound judgment in patients' physical and mental condition/needs.

  2. Observe and document changes in patients' appearance, behavior, and ability to work towards
    treatment plan goals.

  3. Communicate changes in patient's condition to Doctor, Director of Clinical Services, therapist, or Charge Nurse.

  4. Provides assessment in psychosocial/leisure and recreational skills development/deficiency.



  5. Ensure timely documentation of interventions and ensure interventions are based on the patient's Treatment Plan.

  6. Apply appropriate crisis intervention techniques, as required.

  7. Assist patients in achieving their optimum level of independent functioning.

  8. Facilitate recreation therapy 1:1 interventions as assigned, for psychiatric, behavioral, chemically dependent patients.

  9. Document services rendered in accordance with established criteria.

  10. Maintain current documentation in daily progress notes, including the patient's name, date of therapy, name of therapeutic group/intervention, and patient’s progress towards goal.



  11. Effectively plan and implement activity therapy for assigned patient case load.

  12. Monitor therapeutic space, supplies and equipment and ensure they are kept in a clean, orderly and safe condition.

  13. Utilize advanced knowledge of counseling and therapeutic concepts and methods for determining therapeutic services for psychiatric and chemically dependent patients.

  14. Demonstrate knowledge of group dynamics as well as therapy and practice of group processing.

  15. Participate in Holiday Programming planning and facilitation all treatment programs.

Treatment Planning

  1. Provide pertinent feedback to the interdisciplinary treatment team regarding patient response to therapy, treatment interventions, and therapeutic objectives, as appropriate and necessary.

  2. Contribute to treatment plan with specific goals and interventions to be achieved in therapeutic activities.

Job Requirements

Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Occupational, Art, Music, or Recreation therapy, humanities, social work or related therapeutic discipline, or a Master’s degree in Art Therapy, preferred.

Experience: One (1) year of related experience, with knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques with understanding of mental illness, preferred.

Licensure: Certification or licensure by state and/or national governing body in of the following areas: art, occupational, recreation, or music therapy.  CTRS preferred.

Additional Requirements: Successful completion of CPR Certification and successful completion of Handle with Care prior to assisting with a restraining procedure within 30 days of employment. May be required to work overtime and flexible hours.
