This is a strategic position with responsibility for analysis and oversight in patient safety functions in the acute care division. This includes participation in periodic facility surveys to evaluate overall functionality of risk program and target clinical practices associated with risk reduction goals of the company. This position also provides intense oversight for assigned facility risk programs in the areas of patient safety, HIPAA, EMTALA, regulatory compliance and RCA completion. This position reviews, formulates and implements policy and organizational changes as appropriate to meet UHS risk management objectives. Each Corporate Risk Consultant is also responsible for analyzing quarterly dashboard metric measures related to facility success in risk mitigation/management and providing interventions as appropriate based on those measures.


Under supervision of the Corporate Senior Director Risk Management, the Group Manager Risk directs organizational efforts in planning, implementation, evaluation and management of the UHS Risk Management TERM program that is designed to enhance the quality of patient care, reduce injuries, prevent claims and minimize liability exposures. Provides consultation, direction, and assistance to assigned facilities for the implementation, monitoring and enforcement of all aspects of the TERM program; provides consultation and direction to facility based Risk Managers when complex situations arise that may threaten the assets of the Corporation; assists facilities in risk identification, reviews serious incidents with facility Risk Managers, provides guidance in investigations, and development of corrective actions; conducts annual Patient Safety/TERM surveys at assigned facilities and/or as appointed by the Corporate Risk Manager, and also assists in other regulatory surveys as deemed necessary by the Corporate Patient Safety Council.

The Group Manager, Risk is responsible for monitoring the implementation and completion of all corrective plans of action formulated in response to the investigation of a probable claim, evaluation of a near miss event, findings of all patient safety surveys conducted by corporate teams, and findings associated with gap analyses conducted by HRU teams. The Group Manager is responsible for maintaining regular communication of pertinent safety/risk assessments with the facility CEO and regional VP. They are readily available to the CEO, regional VP and any other member of a facility’s senior team for consultation on risk/patient safety issues of concern.
This position also provides support to any Corporate Patient Safety program as assigned, including the NICU and OB HRU, ED HRU and Perioperative HRU teams. Conducts evaluation of success of corrective interventions enacted at the facility level. Communicates pertinent insights and site visit information with facility CEOs and Regional Vice Presidents as developed.

 
Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have a minimum of eight years experience in health care organization with increasing responsibility in risk prevention and risk management with progressive achievement. Master's degree required.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Possess critical thinking skills and independent analysis of identified problems, effectively problem solves utilizing appropriate resources for corrective actions.
• Comprehensive knowledge of risk identification and prevention techniques. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information
• Effective administrative and management skills.
• Ability to manage and motivate facility based staff, using effective interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
• Effective problem solving, persuasion, and negotiation techniques.
• Knowledge of healthcare facility (BH or Acute) operations, functions, and staffing requirements.
• Knowledge of medical/professional staff by-laws and governing board issues.
• Knowledge of insurance and loss control theory and practice in a healthcare environment
• Knowledge and understanding of the principles and procedures for the investigation and processing of professional liability/ medical malpractice claims
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to interpret data and translate abstract concepts into tangible information.
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations, applicable state licensure and accreditation laws and regulations.
• Knowledge and skills with use of computer and various software products (i.e., Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, MIDAS, STARS, etc.)
• Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures
• Frequent travel to assigned facilities and other locations as deemed necessary to accomplish goals of the department/corporation.
