The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering quality general and psychiatric nursing care to patients with emotional or psychiatric disorders; serves actively and constructively as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, supporting the organization and program philosophy of care; ensuring the safety and well-being of each patient. The Registered Nurse:

  • Assesses new patients within 24 hours of admission through a systematic process of interaction with the patient, their significant others or families, and the appropriate health care providers.
  • Collects and analyzes data regarding the patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, and anticipated discharge planning needs and responds to needs assessment calls when necessary.
  • Develops a comprehensive outline of care and updates master treatment plans, special programs, and problem sheets.
  • Assists in developing goals and interventions; gathering relevant data and communicating it to the treatment team.
  • Establishes effective discharge plans, individualized and relevant to the needs of patients and significant others.
  • Maintains effective communication with all units and departments.
  • Maintains designated lines of authority and supervises direct patient care as required.
  • Participates in implementing and managing the therapeutic system and other applicable facets of behaviorally-oriented treatment programs.
  • Implements crisis prevention and intervention procedures as required.
  • Follows correct protocols for crisis management and demonstrates skills in defusing potentially combative or aggressive behaviors; distinguishes correctly between psychotic behavior and self-control problems, manipulation, or rebellious behaviors.
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of psychotropic medications and other medications commonly used with psychiatric patients.
  • Ensures that orders of seclusions & restraints are promptly and correctly followed.
  • Ensures that rounds and interval checks are properly made and documented and that problems are reported in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the selection and orientation of qualified personnel to provide optimum patient care.
  • Participates in in-service programs and takes a leadership role in maintaining therapeutic milieu.
  • Provides guidelines/direction to staff regarding care required; provides structure to the units by ensuring program schedules are implemented.
  • Provides feedback for 90 day and annual performance evaluations for MHS staff.
  • Assures that all psychiatric mental health standards are being met.
  • Attends mandatory monthly nurse meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Must have an Associate's degree or higher in Nursing and a valid State of Alaska RN license.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Must have a working knowledge of basic RN care and standards related to the treatment of pediatric and adult psychiatric populations; ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision; ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions; ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles; ability to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion; capability to adapt to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis; have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal; have excellent assessment skills; and have a working knowledge of computers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical; able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing; demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training; be certified in CPR and Handle with Care Training within the first month of employment and annually thereafter; complete all required mandatory in-services annually; be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray tri-annually thereafter.

GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but are not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting: risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); workload may include day, evening, night, weekend, and/or holiday shifts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to blood borne pathogens and loud noises. Mental demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, but are not limited to the ability to remain calm in stressful environments; and the emotional stability, physical stamina, and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Requirements include, but are not limited to the ability to communicate effectively with employees; the ability to effectively utilize communication equipment; the physical agility to manage cleaning equipment; the ability to read and write. Additionally, the Registered Nurse must frequently utilize physical ability for standing or sitting for long periods of time; regularly utilize physical ability for speaking, hearing, and seeing with correction for close and distance vision, color discrimination, peripheral vision, depth perception and focusing ability.  Speaking and hearing may be necessary for conversing with and assessing employees; be able to ascend/descend stairs and ramps; use body agility; bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; bend legs at knees to come to a rest on knees; be able to extend hands and arms in any direction; be able to use upper and lower extremities to exert force in a pulling or pushing motion. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; be able to raise objects from a lower to higher position or from side-to-side; concentrate amidst distractions; must be able to perform work of a repetitive nature; must respond calmly to potentially volatile clients. The worker is subject to both environmental conditions and hazards, as activities can occur inside and outside with various physical conditions. Mental demands include but are not limited to emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
