The candidate selected will be responsible for the following: 

Plan, assign, supervise and evaluate nursing care to include management of the milieu. Participates in the provision of nursing care directed toward meeting the psychosocial, physical and communication needs of the patients. Conducts the nursing assessment which includes the following factors: psychosocial, social, psychological strengths & weaknesses information from family, nursing diagnosis, substance abuse history, suicide history, medication use, and goals for hospitalization.  Responsible for ensuring all admission assessments have been signed by an RN. ?œ Initiates a nursing care plan within 24 hours of admission. Evaluates and updates care within 24 hours of admission.  Identifies patient symptoms requiring medical attention, or patient problems and behavior changes and communicates these to the Program Director and attending physician. Participates in treatment team and staffing meetings as assigned. Coordinates nursing interventions and implements same as assigned.  Transcribes all physician’s orders immediately and accurately. Administers medications per hospital policy. Demonstrates competency by passing the Medication Administration exam. Ensures that medication consent forms are received from the patient prior to administering meds. Accurately identifies the need for PRN’s. Provides the patient with education regarding medications, explaining rationale for taxin, medication actions, dietary restrictions, and side effects. Documents nursing progress on assigned patients daily. Progress notes refer to problems from the Master Treatment Plan by number; discuss interventions used and measurable progress toward treatment goals. Writes a narrative note in the medical record at discharge which includes disposition and teaching. Promotes communication on the unit by providing report at the end of the shift, communicating with MHT’s during the shift and answering their questions, and writing notes in the Communication Log.  Contacts the attending physician within 4 hours of admission to obtain admission orders. Performs Intake Assessments as assigned with referral of the patient to the appropriate service (inpatient, outpatient, etc.). Accurately performs a nutritional assessment on new admission, with referral to dietician as ordered. Monitors patient acuity for the shift and ensures sufficient numbers of staff are available to meet the objectives of the Nursing Department. Initiates Treatment Plan “problems and goals” based on the nursing assessment. Prepares treatment objectives that are related to goals, which are measurable, and have time frames. Identifies discharge criteria.  Performs face to face nursing assessments on all residents who have been restrained, within one hour of initiation of restraint. Completes required documentation. Supervises LPNs and MHTs on duty. Directs “Code Blue” situations. Complete appropriate documentation.

Job Requirements

Must be a graduate of an accredited Nursing program for Registered Nurses, and hold a valid license in the state of Virginia to practice as an RN.  Upon hire must be credentialed annually in the following areas:  CPR and Medication Administration.  Re-credentialing is done on an annual basis thereafter for CPR and Handle with Care.  Must have three years experience in a psychiatric or substance abuse setting.  Preferred 1 year experience working and/or treating adolescents.
