Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Maternal Child Health, the Registered Nurse is responsible for providing care to maternal and newborn patients. The RN is responsible for maintaining current education and training required for practice. The RN supervises and is accountable for the patient care of all non-RN personnel assigned to work with them.


 Essential Job Duties:

Assessment: Completes head-to-toe history/assessment within 1 hour of admission. Assesses patient within ½ hour after assignment and report completed. Assesses patient changes in care and needs and reports changes to nurse in charge.

Planning: Assigns nursing care to other members of the health care team according to patient need and level of health care given. Updates nursing care plan, as patient's needs change/daily. Nurse’s notes reflect the plan of care. The plan or care is multidisciplinary. Emotional/spiritual needs are part of the plan of care. Participates in discharge planning by recognizing potential problems and initials appropriate interventions.

Implementation: Provides quality-nursing care based on patient's special needs.

Demonstrates basic knowledge of various behavior patterns displayed by the patients or significant others and intervenes appropriately. Supervises the care given by other nursing personnel. Demonstrates basic knowledge regarding critical medical or surgical intervention associated with patient's disease state.

Evaluation and Documentation: Documentation reflects the plan of care and the activities of the patient care. Care plan is updated and resolutions, education and referrals are documented.

Discharge assessment and instructions are completed and signed by the patient. Any unusual occurrence is documented on notification form.

Patient Education: Explains diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to patient and/or significant other. Provides emotional support to patient and/or significant other before, during, and after the procedure. Plans and documents patient educational needs and documents intervention and patient's understanding in care plan and nursing notes. Utilizes audiovisual educational materials. Documents in patient record and nursing care plan, patient's level of understanding.

Follows correct procedure for obtaining informed consent as required and documents patient's awareness in nursing record.

Medication Administration: Demonstrates safe and accurate administration of drugs, using professional judgement.

Consistently ensures a comprehensive patient history and physical with special emphasis on the patient's and family understanding of labor, delivery and the postpartum period.

Functions during patient recovery by: checking the fundus, monitoring vital signs and checking lochia.

Assists with the orientation of nursing personnel to the perinatal department.

Responsibilities to the Medical Staff Communicates significant changes in patient conditions requiring medical attention.

Actively participates in patient teaching for proper care of the newborn.

Physical examination and assessment of the neonate. Identify potential complications in high-risk neonate, knowledge of appropriate action to be taken.

Demonstrates knowledge regarding special treatment of O.B. patients, admitting, transferring and discharging patients. Maintaining supplies and equipment in a patient's room. Familiar with and having on-hand all emergency drugs and supplies for care of O.B.A. and neonates.

Responsibilities to the Unit/Other Departments: Uphold the standards of patient care in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner. Participates in Quality Assurance program.

Evidence that patient rights are supported in decision making and performance of duties. Is aware of medical-legal implications for patients, hospital and staff.

Registered Nurse – (L&D) Performs the initial assessment of the patient by palpating the abdomen, performing a vaginal examination, determining fetal position and descent and notifying the delivering physician.

Able to identify signs of fetal distress, knowledge of appropriate action to be taken.

Assisting with epidurals and caring for patients with epidurals.

Complies and communicated Latch and breastfeeding plan of care to co-workers and colleagues.

Recognizes need for further Lactation Education and/or consultation. Documents referral. Seeks opportunities for professional growth and education in Lactation assistance.

Participates in staff development and departmental in-service opportunities.

Demonstrates awareness of cause-effect in neonatal management. Actively promotes a plan of care for infant feeding intended to prevent/alleviate common newborn adjustment problems.

Interacts with patients and families consistently in a manner which promotes and supports the goals of the Baby Friendly Hospital.

Assesses and documents LATCH and SOFT breastfeeding efforts on assigned mother-baby pairs.

Provides clear, fact-based, concise, current and culturally appropriate patient education regarding infant feeding strategies.

Preparing for and assisting with deliveries by: prepping patient, scrub and circulate c/section deliveries, management of the neonate, cleaning instruments and stripping of delivery room.

Actively transcribes and interprets physician’s orders and follows hospital policy regarding the double noting of medication orders.

Explaining the fetal monitor to patients, operating the monitor efficiently, proper interpretation of monitoring strips. Proper documentation.

Care of the newborn in the delivery room. Possess knowledge and skill necessary to resuscitate the neonate. Physical examination and assessment of the neonate.

Implements currently held “best practice” standards for Maternal-Child care, as described departmental goals.

Actively embraces the family centered approach to Maternal-Child Nursing care. Plans, directs, and implements all aspects of care to best support Maternal-Infant attachment and maternal goals for infant feeding.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:


Experience in Perinatal Care and Obstetrics preferred.


S.T.A.B.L.E. course preferred.


Current California R.N. license required.

Current BLS (CPR) Certificate required.

Current NRP certificate required (90 days from date of hire to obtain).

Advanced Fetal Monitoring certificate preferred for labor and delivery.

AWOHNN Fetal Monitoring certificate preferred within one year of hire date.

ACLS required
