Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health, founded in 1986, is an 82 bed facility within the city of Norfolk, Virginia. Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health offers comprehensive mental health programs to the Commonwealth of Virginia. We provide psychiatrically and medically managed acute and residential treatment for children and adolescents with significant impairments in their social and emotional development. We provide quality care to children and adolescents in need using quality, evidence based practice treatments. We are accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), and are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health currently has job openings for Full Time Monday - Friday Registered Nurse Position for the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). This program is the latest addition of day-time services we provide to adolescents ages 11-17 years of age. Patient services include medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and activity therapy. The candidate selected will be responsible for the following patient care and administrative responsibilities:

Provides patient assessment, nursing care, and evaluation of nursing care.

Ensures consistent use of the nursing process in providing quality patient care and acts as a resource to direct care staff.

Serves as a role model for patients to observe and learn socially effective values, attitudes and behaviors.

Supports the admission process by providing telephonic and face-to-face mental health triage, assessment, and crisis intervention both on-site.

Follows up on status of referral to ensure timely disposition of each case.

Facilitates communication regarding patient treatment process and needs with referral sources and payers.

Ensures coordinated, effective patient care including admission, continued stays, and discharge requirements.

Ensures continued availability (recertification) of financial resources throughout the patient’s stay.


Education: Graduate from an accredited nursing program with licensure and registration by the Virginia Board of Nurse Examiners as a Registered Nurse.

Experience: One year prior child/adolescent psychiatric experience preferred.

Experience with admissions and utilization review preferred. Knowledge: Must possess knowledge of general and child/adolescent psychiatric nursing, therapeutic relationships, therapeutic processes, growth and development, limit-setting and behavior management, crisis management with aggressive behaviors and CPR.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to stand for multiple hours. The incumbent must by physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent, mentally ill patients as necessary including lifting, supporting, holding, kneeling, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring, and pushing and pulling equipment, such as, wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds. Ability to perform CPR and First Aid.
