Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center is a Joint Commission approved and state licensed facility for 88 beds, which includes pediatric units, adolescent girls, adolescent boys, and MISA (Mental Illness Substance Abuse) unit. We are committed to providing youth with compassionate treatment that encourages self-responsibility and personal growth. Lincoln Prairie provides treatment to children and adolescents (ages 3-17) that present with a broad range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Lincoln Prairie offers an array of outpatient programs. We provide educational programs, enhanced Occupational Therapy services, Recreational Therapy, Art and Music Therapy, while utilizing a holistic treatment approach.

 

We are seeking a Registered Nurse to support Lincoln Prairie’s mission. The R.N. assesses, directs, delegates, coordinates and evaluates patient care through collaborative efforts with health team members and in accordance with the nursing process and the standards of care and practices. The Staff Nurse provides direction and clinical and administrative supervision to all nursing staff assigned to the unit. Coordination of all staff assignments ensures that all patients will receive optimal care and that the unit duties are completed.

 

The primary responsibilities of this position, include:

  • Provides quality, professional, psychiatric nursing care.
  • Completes admission process and paperwork, including an initial nursing assessment, pain assessment, fall assessment and functional screening, and nutritional screening form.
  • Lists all current medications upon admission on the medications reconciliation form. Contact MD for admission orders and document such on the medical reconciliation form.
  • Provides supervision to all nursing staff assigned to the unit. Ensures staff has completed their assignments and documentation for assigned patients.
  • Initiates initial MTP, problem description, long term, short term goals and treatment modalities based on comprehensive and initial nursing assessment findings.
  • Accurately transcribes physician's orders and administers prescribed medications and treatment. Identifies need for PRN medication.
  • Teach patients about their medication, actions, side-effects and any contra- indications.
  • Reviews Lab and EKG reports.  Notifies physician of abnormal results and documents such on the progress notes and TPR's.
  • Assesses unit milieu and maintains a safe, therapeutic environment for patients and staff.  Modifies milieu according to patient's age and developmental needs of the patients. Is responsible for the safe use of crisis interventions, documentation and discontinuation of physical hold and seclusions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills and ability to intervene during psychiatric emergencies such as restraints, seclusion and physical holds.  Utilizes the least restrictive measures prior to utilization of Seclusion and Restraints.
  • Actively participates in the discharge planning process and completes all pertinent documentation related to discharge process.
  • Responds to patient/family/guardian complaints.
  • Assures compliance with applicable laws pertaining to psychiatric treatments.
Job Requirements
  • Education: Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing required.
  • Experience:  One-year prior psychiatric experience in mental health nursing preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed to practice by the Illinois State Board of Nursing. Successful completion of CPR certification, age-specific training and the current patient aggression management training, including appropriate use of Seclusion and Restraint, within 90 days of employment. Must pass a medication administration exam.
  • Knowledge/Skills: Must possess knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing processes, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting, crisis and behavior management, restraint and seclusion procedures and criteria and CPR training. Must be self motivated, results-oriented individual who is customer focused.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.  Physical agility to manage patients with crisis prevention interventions.  Push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds.  Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping. Ability to perform visual and auditory observation of patients.  Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment  urine drug screen. Environmental Conditions: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.
