Description:

Position Summary: In this role, the Principal Research Chemist designs and conducts high level analytical testing for product development and various field problem-solving requests. The individual has strong GC-MS, flavor chemistry and volatile isolation skills. They also serve as a coach and mentor to more junior chemists and technicians. The position interfaces with product, process and packaging development, quality and food safety teams, providing input for robust experimental design and ensuring timely results and insights. The individual helps ensure instrumentation and methodology are suitable for the project challenges and helps identify and implement capability enhancements. The individual must also have strong oral and written business communication skills.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for method development and higher-level analytical testing of food materials; primarily GCMS volatiles and flavor analyses.
  • Chromatographic data interpretation and correlation back to process, materials or contamination issues
  • Function as a technical resource in all areas of analytical, food and flavor chemistry.
  • Independently plan, conduct and report on research experimentation
  • Keep current on leading edge analytical technologies and bring new capabilities to PepsiCo laboratories
  • Use expertise to influence the action and thinking of other scientists and engineers
  • Maintain high professional relationships and technical communication with other PepsiCo Analytical Chemists
  • Develops & documents methods for volatile chemical and flavor analyses
  • Integrates functional expertise with business objectives to identify critical testing needs and timing
  • Develop reports and presentations that clearly and concisely communicate conclusions and recommendations
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation

Critical Competencies:

  • Demonstrates expertise and strong knowledge of flavor, analytical, and food chemistry
  • Expertise in techniques for isolation of volatile compounds from food, beverage and packaging
  • Expertise in GC-MS instrumentation, software, and IT systems
  • Technical strength in GCMS data interpretation and problem solving food and/or beverage flavor issues
  • Proven track record in experimental design, creative thinking, technical explanation and reporting
  • Ability to troubleshoot, identify root cause, and implement corrective action
  • Communicate information in a clear, proactive, and timely basis
  • Work effectively as a member of cross functional teams
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet evolving goals and needs of teams
  • Proactively seeks new, simple, and rapid ways of conducting test procedures and practices that promote lab performance and efficiencies
  • Outstanding teamwork, communication and leadership skills



Qualifications:

  • Ph. D. in Flavor, Organic, or Analytical Chemistry with 7+ years of experience or a Master's Degree in Flavor, Organic, or Analytical Chemistry with 12+ years of experience in GC and GCMS headspace analysis of foods, beverages and/or flavor components
  • Expertise in isolation of volatile compounds from food and/or beverages
  • Knowledge in complimentary analytical instruments to GCMS flavor analysis
  • Outstanding teamwork, communication and leadership skills
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills
  • Experience in snacks and/or beverages is preferred
