Job Description

:The ECT Nurse oversees nursing interventions conducted by nursing staff and med techs as prescribed by the physician, and serves as Licensed Independent Practitioner during restraint, seclusion, and behavioral crisis intervention.  Also coordinates risk management, maintenance, environment of care, infection control, and medical records functions for the department.   :

Performs position specific job functions within professional nursing standards.  Completes position responsibilities by following established guidelines and protocols within appropriate time frames.  Initial assessment of all new patients.  Obtains records from previous admissions or any medical information needed.  Provides education about ECT procedure & obtaining level of understanding from patient and family.  Coordinates Benefits with Utilization Review and Business Office.  Pre-certifies all Outpatient ECT’s and ongoing Utilization Review.  Schedules Outpatient for internist appointment for medical clearance.  Obtains and reviews lab work and EKG’s prior to treatment date.  Reviews consents prior to ECT.  Compiles ECT chart prior to treatment date.  Notifies MD and Anesthesia Dept. of condition changes in patient and cancellations and add-ons to the Patient Schedule.  Under the supervision of the DON makes routine employment decisions and supervises, coordinates, and evaluates the work of professional and non-professional clinical personnel.  Under the supervision of the DON, schedules and assigns staff according to patient needs; guides and advises subordinates as necessary.  Assists in operating the department within defined limitations; reports and exhibits variances.  Coordinates unit activities with Medical Staff and other departments of the Hospital.  Maintains optimal standards of clinical care and constantly evaluates results.  Assists and maintains performance improvement program as assigned.  Provides clinical and administrative leadership.  Promotes an environment in which patient care team can work cooperatively toward objectives.  Promotes a clean, safe and secure environment for patient care on assigned unit(s).  Assists in administering the unit philosophy of clinical services and in defining and developing overall long and short-range objectives.  Assumes and/or performs additional duties as requested and makes sound decisions within the range of expectation for the job.  Promotes a positive working environment and guest relations.  Coordinates the utilization of nursing personnel to meet the acuity needs of each clinical area.  Assures compliance with all standards and policies of the Facility.  Provides leadership through assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of nursing services provided in each clinical area.  Supports and participates in hospital-wide Quality Improvement activities.  Development, implementation and evaluation of education programs designed to meet the competency needs of nursing and clinical staff.  Ongoing monitoring and documentation of employee compliance with designated aspects of infection control and work safety, in collaboration with the Infection Control Coordinator, Plant Manager and the Risk Manager.  Interacts with and assists in teaching staff.  Serves as a clinical resource person to staff members in their daily activities.  Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements

:

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of psychiatric nursing skills, ability to assess patient physical and emotional status. Knowledge of seclusion and restraint protocols, national patient safety standards, age specific competencies, pain management, and standards established by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

  • Accurately conveys patient behavior and status verbally and in writing. Professional verbal and written skills for communicating patient status, and treatment needs to clients, families, professionals, and employees of the facility. Able to verbally adapt spoken communication to meet needs of patient.

  • Proficiency in facilitating medication education groups, and training ADL skills.Able to safely de-escalate and manage aggressive patients, to oversee seclusion and physical restraint of patients per policy. Able to handle multiple projects under deadlines with short notice.

  • Maintains professional therapeutic relationships with staff, patients, families and visitors. Able to maintain patient confidentiality.

  • Able to provide leadership and supervision of direct care staff, to delegate responsibilities, make shift assignments, and monitor performance.

     

Education/Training:

Graduate of an accredited school for Registered Nurse program.

 

Licensure/Certification:

Current Oklahoma Registered Nurse licensure.   Current Oklahoma Driver’s License (requirement for staff on Driver’s List)

 

Experience:

Prefer two years work experience in a psychiatric treatment setting with children and/or adolescents.

Able to sustain physical activity eight hours a day and remain on feet eight hours per day.  Hearing, vision, sensory, and emotional stability sufficient to perform essential job functions.  Able to deal with stressful situations and changing priorities.  Able to lift, carry, and lower up to 35 pounds using appropriate body mechanics.  Able to push patients in wheel chairs up and down hills and pursue running patients.  Access to reliable transportation; maintains reliable attendance record and arrives in a timely manner.
