Position Summary:
This position reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and has direct responsibility for Intensive Care Unit, Progressive Care Unit and Telemetry monitoring technicians. Will evaluate, plan, advance and monitor clinical practice of units and services. Will work in concert with administration and other organization and clinical leaders. Provides administrative direction for development and evaluation of all nursing employees, and maintains operational aspects of the patient care unit in collaboration with support services. Contributes to nursing and the hospital through support of philosophy and objectives, educational and EBP efforts. Accountable to assure that HCAHPS, patient, employee, and physicians satisfaction scores are all in acceptable ranges and improving. Accountable for building and directing teams to improve core measures and other Joint Commission initiatives. Assures department is Survey ready at all times, including nursing documentation, facility, and all National Patient Safety Goals. Has ongoing communication with nurses both one on one and through rounding, meetings and Clinical Unit Councils. Is proactive in identifying needs of staff and resolves issues to improve patient care and supports organization direction.
A. 24/7 management responsibility for assigned department(s).
B. Able to write Policies & Procedures in concert with Title-22 requirements, DHS and CCS requirements.
C. Has personnel, fiscal and material management, and coordination of development and quality improvement program.
D. Assure that the highest quality nursing care is delivered to the patient in the most cost effective manner by the entire nursing team. Complete nurse assignments, taking into consideration the Patient Classification Acuity, Title-22 Mandates, nurse competencies, and special needs of patient or family.
E. Assists the multi-disciplinary team to return the patient to a state of optimal wellness or to a state in which the highest quality of life can be maintained.
F. Collaborates with all members of the health care delivery team, nursing leadership, and senior management to deliver quality health care in an efficient, cost effective manner.
G. Attends Bed Meeting as directed and communicates patient flow needs with the CNO, Bed Control, and/or Administrative Supervisor. Functions in the Bed Control and/or Administrative Supervisor role as requested.
H. Is able to alternate plans effectively in a changing, high pace environment, and communicate effectively in a positive manner. Able to respond to all emergencies in a calm demeanor.
I. Responsible for directing staff to follow all Core Measure initiatives and assures they are completed prior to the patient being discharged.
J. Responsible for driving the HCAPS survey along with the patient satisfaction surveys in a positive direction. Assures licensed staff are signing off their own orders & communicating effectively with the staff and physicians on a consistent basis.
K. Completes the staff evaluation process and ongoing guidance of the nursing team both verbal and written. .
L. Competent in overseeing payroll and ensuring staff clock accurately, timely, preventing overtime.

A. Work Experience: Five (5) years of clinical experience in specialty as a Registered Nurse with demonstrated management or leadership abilities in critical care, including (3) years of acute care nursing management experience.
B. Education: Graduate of an approved/accredited School of Nursing or equivalent. BSN required. Master’s Degree in Nursing completed or in progress preferred. 
C. License, Certification, or Registration required: Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
D. National Certification preferred: (i.e. CCRN).
E. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, patients, staff and the general public. Writes minutes for meetings in an ongoing and timely manner.
F. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
G. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical/clinical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Able to direct teams to improve scores and coach critical thinking skills.
H. Special Qualifications: Ability to manage all emergencies, a fast paced environment and handle multiple priorities at one time. Must be capable of making decisions under pressure as well as appropriately managing the anger, fear, hostility and violence of others. A good communicator and treats all staff in a fair and consistent manner. Serves as a coach, mentor and role model for other staff members.
