Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a residential program, for males and females ages 11-21, consist of a cognitive behavioral treatment model that encourages youth to safely explore thoughts and feelings related to the development of positive and desirable behavior within their homes and communities. Our programs have been designed to provide each individual resident quality mental health treatment in a safe therapeutic environment.

It is the mission of Newport News Behavioral Health Center to promote recovery from the effects of abuse, addiction and other behavioral issues through specialized treatment interventions provided by a community of caring professionals.

Newport News Behavioral Health Center has an excellent career opportunity for an experienced Science Teacher to join our team of dedicated professionals.

The candidate selected will be responsible for the following:

• Reviews records and information received from the student’s home school in order to plan the educational program. Contacts the parents/guardians and home school system to get further input on student’s educational needs and obtain student interims and report cards.
• Develops and implements IEP for students who are eligible for Special Education services, within 30 days of entrance into the program.
• Invites parents and local education agency representative to IEP meeting by letters and phone call. Files copies of letters and documents in student’s file.
• Participates in IEP meeting.
• Must provide individualized instruction for all students assigned to classroom and provide necessary accommodations as prescribed by the IEP as evidenced by lesson plan submitted to lead teacher or Director of Education on a weekly basis.
• Provides educational and behavioral strategies for working with student as requested.
• Writes monthly academic and behavioral progress notes for each student.
• Maintains student records in accordance with Virginia Special Education regulations.
• Evaluates student work and completes report cards according to school calendar and distributes to the appropriate parties.
• Participates in CQI activities for the facility and ensures departmental compliance with hospital, state and JCAHO standards.
• Attends and participates in weekly school staff meetings.
• Attends and participates in monthly education department meeting.
• Participates in curriculum revision and program development.
• Maintains plan book, plans classroom activities at least one week in advance.
• Provides direction to teaching assistants regarding classroom activities, schedule, and behavior management strategies.
• Maintains an organized, safe classroom environment.
• Ensures completion of time-out logs and incident reports by team members and maintains a log, listing by student daily level, kool downs, physical hold and length of time.
• Maintains student attendance record.
• Ensures that the established schedule is maintained.
• Notifies a school administrator of all parent and student concerns or complaints, safety issues, medical issues, behavioral emergencies, student/staff issues, and transportation issues daily.
• Maintains license and certification requirements (teaching license, CPR, etc.).

Job Requirements

• Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching License in at least one science content area for middle or high school.
• Must be able to teach Middle School Science, in addition to Physical Science, Earth Science, Biology, Environmental Science, and Chemistry.
• Must have a good working knowledge of Virginia Special Education regulations, IEP development and behavior management techniques. Special Education licensure will be considered in lieu of Science.
• Previous classroom experience in a mental health setting is preferred.
