Scientific and Laboratory Services (SLS) - Analytical Sciences is a team within Pfizer Global Supply - Global Quality Operations - Quality Systems &; Compliance. SLS-Analytical Sciences provides scientific and analytical support to Pfizer's manufacturing sites and other key customers worldwide.

Job Description:

Our scientists provide (1) analytical testing such as impurity identification/preparation,

extractible & leachables evaluation and investigative application of specialized laboratory instrumentation; (2) Comprehensive support for the entire Analytical Method Lifecycle; (3) Technical consulting for challenging site investigations that support cGMP compliance, supply continuity, product (re)registration or cost of supply; and (4) analytical support for Pfizer's Intellectual Property Enforcement through generic and branded product monitoring and counterfeit testing to support supply chain integrity.

Typical duties include (1) performing analyses using traditional and state-of-the-art analytical techniques, (2) developing or evaluating new test methodologies or analytical applications, (3) validating and transferring analytical methods, (4) generating data to support site manufacturing and/or complaint investigations and resolving project-related questions, (5) troubleshooting equipment and methods, (6) analyzing and interpreting analytical data, (7) preparing or reviewing written procedures, protocols and reports, (8) providing technical training to others, and (9) contributing to improved laboratory operations processes and procedures.

Duties may also include: (10) working directly with project sponsors and/or SLS Managers/Team Leaders to evaluate project requests and manage projects to insure that timelines and deliverables are met, (11) serving as technical subject matter expert or consultant to project teams or a functional area.


Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or related field with a minimum of 3 years analytical chemistry experience.

M.S. degree in Chemistry or related field with a minimum of 5 years analytical chemistry experience.

B.S. degree in Chemistry or related field with a minimum of 7 years analytical chemistry experience.

Experience in the pharmaceutical industry with analytical development and validation and/or characterization of materials, active ingredients and Drug Products in a GMP environment is required. Expertise in trace metals analysis on pharmaceutical products using ICP/MS required. Working experience with Agilent ICP/MS instrumentation and Mass Hunter software highest desirable.

Work experience/skills: A broad knowledge of applied and theoretical analytical chemistry is required. A working knowledge of organic chemistry, including degradation mechanisms of pharmaceutical active ingredients and pharmaceutical products is highly desired.

Strong time management and organization skills are required. The ability to work with minimal supervision is required. Must have demonstrated the ability to independently manage technical projects and provide technical direction to others. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with non-US based colleagues are required. Fluency in or knowledge of a second language (e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese) is desirable.

This position requires a DEA clearance as part of the background check to allow for handling of DEA scheduled controlled substances.

Expertise with ICP/MS, HPLC, GC, HPLC/MS and/or GC/MS technology using automated data acquisition systems is required. Experience with FT-IR, Raman and/or other spectroscopic techniques desired. Demonstrated independent accomplishment of complex analytical method development and validation is required. The ideal candidate will have experience with API, in-process, and finished dosage form methods with focus on trace metals analysis. The candidate must possess strong analytical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and the ability to predict potential API impurities and degradants is highly desired. Knowledge of cGMP laboratory requirements is required.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

No atypical physical conditions exist nor are unusual physical abilities required to successfully function in role. Position represents a typical laboratory-based function.

Non-Standard Work Schedule Travel or Environment Requirements:

Work is primarily accomplished on first shift, but may include early mornings or late evenings to communicate with global customers or address laboratory operations. Occasional travel may be required to visit global customer sites. Occasional handling of hazardous substances may be required (OEB5).
