Job Title Scientist, Transgenic Model

JobID 1611935

Location: Andover, MA

Description Pfizer is increasingly relying on human genetics to inform the discovery and validation of new drug targets and the mechanistic understanding of disease pathology. A necessary component of testing potential targets arising from any source is assessment of functional consequences of candidate variants or genes in rodent models, to determine physiological effect and tractability to drug discovery. A small unit is forming to respond to the need for validation of targets, through rapid generation of transgenic mice. The Microinjectionist will work in this group and be responsible for technical creation of models by injection of CRISPR constructs, and for participating in animal breeding with support of two dedicated husbandry experts from Comparative Medicine. The unit will partner with colleagues responsible for in vitro functional genomics to develop overall strategies for testing and prioritizing nominated targets in key disease areas and will be responsible for testing and applying the latest technical developments in gene editing and transgenic model creation. This is a unique opportunity to play an integral role in executing the strategy of one of the world's leading developers of novel therapeutics.

+ Skilled in technical aspects of cell culture, microinjection, implantation, working with CRISPR constructs, breeding of animals, and other aspects of generation of genetically engineered model mice.

+ Able to support the initiation of estimated up to fifty model lines per year.

+ Develop and apply systems for efficient project tracking and management and throughput.

+ Support the testing of new and experimental technologies for creation of animal models, together with other members of the group.

+ Coordinate with Comparative Medicine for colony expansion.

+ Rigorous compliance with the letter and spirit of all animal welfare and safety protocols.

+ Bachelor's degree in biology or related field with 2-4 years of experience, or Master's degree in biology with 0-2 years of experience.

+ Demonstrated expert in microinjection and cell culture with good understanding of all the scientific and practical steps involved in making transgenic models.

+ Ability to engage closely in multiple projects local and remote and to track record of timely execution.

+ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to maintain productive and congenial collaborations in a fast-paced environment.

+ Devotion to advancing team goals and enthusiasm for contributing to the mission of drug discovery.

+ Able to spend significant time at microscope.

+ Ability to work with laboratory rodents.

+ 5 years of experience, preferably but not necessarily including experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, in a range of functional genomic technologies; solid understanding of bioinformatics tools and computational biology opportunities.
