Position Description

Optum combines data, technology, and expertise to power modern health care. The Senior Analyst for Client Solutions will be responsible for defining and executing innovative methods and approaches to meet the information and insight needs of the Life Sciences industry, particularly with regards to product commercialization.


Optum’s industry-leading data assets include clinically-robust Electronic Health Record (EHR) data spanning the care continuum (from the legacy Humedica business), eligibility-controlled affiliate and non-affiliate insurance claims data, a new class of deterministically-linked Integrated EHR and claims data, and linked profile data including socio-economic information and health risk assessments (HRAs). Optum’s data assets enable our clients to enrich their view of the patient and the patient journey through the healthcare system, serving needs across a spectrum of functional areas including real world evidence, health economics and outcomes research, safety and surveillance, epidemiology, and product commercialization.


Optum’s advanced analytic tools empower our clients to harness intelligence from these data assets with scale. Optum’s suite of tools include NorthStar, an application that reveals how the patient’s clinical presentation impacts treatment choice, Clinformatics for Managed Markets, an application that assesses the effect of plan design and patient cost-sharing on drug utilization, Clinformatics for Clinical Trials, an application that optimizes clinical trial recruitment, and a next generation set of advanced analytic applications designed for a platform ecosystem, including a patient journey module.

We’re now looking for a Senior Analyst to focus on Commercial Analytics.



Primary Responsibilities:

  • Solve unique and complex problems with broad impact on the business

  • Scope analytic requirements based on client business questions, in collaboration with lead client consultant

  • Contribute to proposals and business development as methods subject matter expert

  • Define statistical methods and approaches by creating analytic plan for team

  • Perform statistical quality assurance review and program validation for each project

  • Interpret results, in collaboration with lead client consultant

  • Help to prepare and present client-facing materials that describe methods and conclusions

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MBA, MS, PhD) in a mathematics related program (Statistics, Mathematics, Management Science, etc.) or from a social or physical science program with a quantitative component (Econometrics, Sociology, Physics, etc.) with 5 years of work experience, preferably in the life sciences industry, healthcare field, or management consulting.

  • 4 or more years of experience creating statistical analysis plans / methods approaches and leading analytic engagements for clients or internal clients

  • 5 years of experience in database programming (SQL and / or SAS)

  • Expertise with statistical software (SAS, R etc.) and ability to independently perform and describe statistical analyses

  • Experience leveraging patient-level healthcare data (claims, EHR, etc.) to support commercially oriented business questions such as forecasting and segmentation

  • Travel required - 0-10%


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

  • Strong attention to detail, coupled with excellent time and resource management skills
