Description This Senior Associate Lab Automation role is responsible for data and process automation workflows supporting all Pfizer Research and Development (R&D) Business Technology (BT) benchtop laboratory systems on the West Coast. A successful candidate will need to build a close working relationship with the scientific community and partner with the global benchtop organization. She/he will need to own the implementation of projects in the lab environment, make sound recommendations and address moderately complex issues and/or scientific requirements.

The focus of this position is to provide data workflow, storage, and archiving support for Oncology and Vaccine laboratories and their partner lines in California. We are looking for a quick learner with pharma or biotech experience, strong communication skills, customer focused, and a solid technical foundation upon which to add new skills and technologies as well as some scientific know-how.

+ Overall accountability for the West Coast R&D laboratory data and workflow automation projects and tasks with minimum supervision.

+ Implement and manage laboratory automation/controls/data acquisition projects ensuring that objectives are clearly defined and that project deliverables are achieved within budgetary and time constraints.

+ Scripting custom automated workflows on large integrated instrumentation systems using tools such as LabWare LIMS, Core LIMS, LabVantage LIMS, MatLab and etc. that are moderately in complexity.

+ Working collaboratively with our scientists and vendors to build efficient automated laboratory workflows in support of genomics, analytical chemistry, imaging, and high throughput screening.

+ Acting as an advocate and ambassador for lab automation to enhance workflow efficiency, more robust data storage, data access and data visualization.

+ Identify, implement and lead data integrity methodologies for research systems to ensure absolute reliability of the data that's being generated by working semi-independently.

+ Engage with West Coast research scientists to understand their business needs, proactively recommend and streamline existing solutions by using proving techniques to amend and optimize standard solutions.

+ Seek solutions by interacting with the global benchtop team and/or experts outside of the department or company by working collaboratively.

+ Responsible for installing, configuring, optimizing and streamlining R&D benchtop applications by working closely with vendors and their informaticians.

+ Operate with minimum supervision; respond to ambiguous situations and shifting priorities within a work group or department.


+ BS or MS in a scientific, engineering or related field.

+ Degree or minor in Biology, Chemistry or other life sciences field is a plus.

+ 8+ years of IT experience and 2+ years in supporting the scientific and lab systems in the biotech/pharma industry.

+ Must have a strong work experience in the pharma/biotech industry.

+ Proven ability to work effectively within the scientific community.

+ Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, work in a team environment, follow written policies/procedures, maintain superior customer service at all times with all users.

+ Experience with lab safety and vivarium preferred.

+ Promotes teamwork by participating as a team player while also demonstrating effective communication skills with the team and management.

+ Knowledge of systems, data and workflow automation as it relates to scientific instrumentation.

+ Demonstrates a high level knowledge in research processes.

+ Prior hands-on LIMS experience required such as LabWare, LabVantage, Core, MatLab or other relevant tools.

+ Scripting/programming experience especially using LIMS tools.

+ Experience with Active Directory and a good understanding of LDAP.

+ Proven analytical, organizational and troubleshooting skills.

+ Desire to learn about research systems, applications and data needs.

+ Ability to optimize design and implementation of lab systems including hardware, software, instrumentation and networking equipment.

+ Good understanding of storage systems such as NAS, SAN and etc.

+ Experience with managing TB scale research data necessary.

+ Familiarity with integrating applications with work flow in a laboratory setting is a plus.

+ Knowledge of Virtual Machines/virtualization is required.

+ Must understand computer validation principles and 21 CFR Part 11.

+ Knowledge of PLCs such as implementing control methodology with a high level of understanding of various programming languages is a plus.

+ Demonstrates a business acumen that allows for effective utilization of tools and standards to ensure project deliverables are met.
