Description:

The Senior Associate, Portfolio Strategy:

  • Is responsible for supporting the product and transaction development activities of the Retirement Business Unit (BU) of Prudential Financial.

 

  • Will work with the Vice Presidents, Portfolio Strategy and Portfolio Management to set strategic asset allocation objectives for new products, new transactions, and in-force business using third party and in-house analytics.

  • Will test tactical asset allocation opportunities, working closely with the business to quantify the overall impact on the business, including the impact on Adjusted Operating Income, risk, capital, and reserves.

  • Will conduct investment related research in order to develop and support new investment opportunities and to identify and find ways to mitigate liability risks.

Reporting: 

This position reports to the Managing Director, Portfolio Strategy for Retirement

In performing this role, the Senior Associate, Portfolio Strategy will operate under guidelines and limits set by Prudential’s Senior Asset Liability Council (ALCO), the Investment Committee of the Board and will work towards achieving BU objectives. 

Responsibilities:

The Senior Associate, Portfolio Strategy is primarily responsible for:

  • Developing the PRT transaction asset management assumptions and participating the BU’s Strategic Asset Allocation (“SAA”) recommendation for BU Asset Liability Council sign-off;

  • Analyzing potential liability/asset/capital asset allocation strategies aimed at optimizing business results; and,

  • Engaging in liability pricing and model development as a member of the BU pricing process.

The Senior Associate, Portfolio Strategy will assist in Pension Risk Transfer (PRT) funded transactions, participating in evaluation of the asset in-kind portfolio and the premium rollforward development and tracking. 

The Senior Associate will participate in BU planning and management meetings and attend financial review sessions.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing input to investment assumptions that underlie successful product pricing.

 

  • Maintaining communication and coordination with the Retirement Portfolio Management team.

  • Participation in Global Portfolio Management (GPM)-directed projects.


The ideal candidate’s qualifications include:

  • A minimum of 4 - 6 years of relevant asset/liability management, portfolio management or business specific experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of various asset classes, yield curves, and derivatives.
  • Working understanding of insurance products offered in Retirement.
  • Ability to identify risks associated with insurance products and to recommend asset strategies to mitigate those risks.
  • Highly effective communicator, coordinator and thought-partner; comfortable and effective partnering with senior level executive team.
  • Open-minded, innovative, and strategic thinker.
  • Ability to work with stochastic models and other quantitative tools. 

Bachelors degree required.  Preferred candidates would have an MBA and/or CFA designation.

Performance assessment and compensation is significantly tied to business unit performance, including:

  • Adjusted Operating Income (AOI) versus target,
  • Return on required equity,
  • Long term investment spread margin performance, and
  • Contribution to BU growth initiatives.
