Job Details

This position resides in the Process Modeling & Engineering Technology group within Drug Product Design. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the computational and modeling of drug product processing targeted to aid the project portfolio and key technologies in DPD. Key skills include understanding fluid and granular flows, particularly Discrete Element Method (DEM), and applying the models to help address the target outcome for pharmaceutical processes. This position also entails learning and applying a variety of modeling tools available within Pfizer to projects and technologies - and demonstrating expertise in programming and working with high-performance computing environment.


+ Apply computational models and tools to generate results needed to support Pfizer portfolio projects and technologies.

+ Deploy and use a variety of computational tools - especially DEM to model powder flows in pharmaceutical unit operations.

+ Use and apply other computational tools - process models, statistical models, data analysis and visualization, programming support and automation - to accelerate the drug development process.

+ To support modeling efforts, plan and execute experimental studies in collaboration with experimental experts.

+ Support Pfizer's key technology platforms: Portable, Continuous, Minature and Modular (PCMM) tablet manufacturing and Multiparticulates.

+ Work closely with project scientists, which entails regularly attending project meetings and individual meetings to inform self and others, in order to tailor modeling activities to project needs.

+ Communicate and present results internally at meetings and, on occasion, at external forums.

+ Build a strong understanding of granular flows and pharmaceutical unit operations, and apply knowledge to support advancement of predictive sciences at Pfizer.


MINIMUM: Bachelors of Sciences or Engineering with + 2 years of experience, with a focus on computational modeling. M.S. in Physics, Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Biophysics with 0-2 years of experience.

DESIRABLE: B.S. + 2 years of experience with using and applying computational modeling in an pharmaceutical setting.

**Technical Skills:**

+ Knowledge of powder flows; fundamental engineering/physical concepts such as mass, momentum, and energy transport phenomenon; and a mathematical ability to solve linear, non-linear, and differential equations.

+ Experience with discrete element modeling (DEM) method - commercial or open-source software.

+ Must demonstrate ability to run DEM simulations for industrially-relevant flow situations.

+ Must be familiar with executing simulations in a high-performance-computing environment.

+ Strong programming/coding skills, with some experience in numerical techniques, is essential.

+ Capability and willingness to design, execute (hands-on), analyze and interpret laboratory experimentation.

+ Strong organizational skills, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

+ Solid scientific understanding of physical processes relevant to pharmaceutical industry, such as powder/fluid rheology, dissolution kinetics, chemical kinetics, as they relate to dosage form design and bioperformance.

+ Knowledge of data analysis and visualization packages is preferred.

+ Experience using Matlab, C/C++, SQL, or related coding languages is preferred.

+ Candidate should be able to work effectively as part of cross-functional teams and embrace team work.
