The Senior Business Analyst will be responsible for supporting a series of technology owned programs supporting UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare and Retirement line of business.  As a senior business analyst, you will help the M&R Chief Architect identify key needs across the M&R organization and frame up initiatives to address technology gaps impacting M&R’s growth potential. The role is responsible for defining projects, gathering business & technical requirements, identify benefits streams and partnering with Optum Technology on the delivery of these initiatives. The individual will work closely with the UHC Technology and Optum Technology organizations to ensure all aspects of these programs are identified and fully understood prior to beginning development work and help resolve issues through the delivery lifecycle.  The individual in this role can expect to support 2 to 3 projects at a given time, with each project ranging from $1M to $3M or more in capital funding. As such, the role is highly visible and critical to the success of the UHC M&R segment.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Gather and/or document information on stakeholders' business requirements, specifications, and/or needs for large scale complex projects (e.g., conduct intake process; ask questions; review project charter; monitor regulation; review reports)
  • Facilitate and lead the business and technology teams in gathering requirements and helping to choose the best way to implement requirements
  • Document and ensure Use Cases adequately represent the needs of the business and meet all requirements, including coordination with System Analysts, Architects and Development Teams
  • Propose recommended and innovative solutions following internal processes and methodologies (e.g., Requirements and Solutions Analysis), including creating, controlling and improving business processes
  • Provide subject matter expertise, recognize and analyze gaps between current situation and desired outcome and utilize appropriate resources to obtain information, consider solutions and deliver the solution
  • Ability to analyze root-cause issue, solve complex problems / conceptual analysis and provide key recommendations for implementation process improvements
  • Ability to engage matrix partner teams (Technology, Operations, Reporting, Quality, Legal, Regulatory, etc.) to effectively deliver on each project
  • Understand strategic priorities and implement effective solutions that support business priorities; think strategically and deliver tactically
  • Provide timely written and/or verbal communications regarding project progress including deliverables, significant milestones, risks and mitigation strategies to the management team
  • Communicate and manage potential impacts and risks associated with implementing proposed solutions to business partners and relevant Stakeholders
  • Support project management activities:  Charter/Scope, Project Plan, IRAD/Issue Log, CBA, FMEA, Control Plan, Lessons Learned, Close Document, etc.
  • Ability to function in a multi-project environment with changing priorities
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field and/or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in gathering requirements, testing solutions for large scale, techno-functional projects
  • 4+ years of experience documenting processes and practices, effectively prioritizing multiple tasks, priorities, projects, and deadlines
  • 4+ years of experience in leading / supporting large scale techno-functional projects, including time management, organizational, and prioritization skills
  • 3+ years of experience in tracking, planning projects, working with large data sets and making data-driven analytical decisions
  • Advanced level of proficiency with Excel, Visio, PowerPoint
  • Excellent oral and written communications and presentation skills with ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience with PPM Optics or similar Project Portfolio Mgt Tool
  • Project management training
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Project, Access, SharePoint
  • Six Sigma training / certification
  • Healthcare domain expertise, knowledge of operational process flows
