Description

This position will report directly to the Vice President of Engineering Operations for Cox Automotive, and will align with and support the SVP, Engineering for Retail Solutions, driving the next phase of Retail Solutions Engineering’s strategic evolution. The Senior Director, Engineering Operations (SD, EO) has responsibility for creating and implementing strategies within a broad number of areas impacting an organization of 1,000 team members. The SD, EO will enable the SVP Engineering to deliver value to our clients as we serve the mission to transform the way the world buys, sells, and owns cars.

By focusing on an array of functions that must now become more aligned across Retail Solutions and Cox Automotive, the SD, Engineering Operations will be responsible for areas such as talent acquisition and retention, centralized communications, strengthened management disciplines, technology support platforms, developing and implementing metrics and driving practices that support productive and efficient product value delivery to our clients.
This position will also be responsible for the maturation and excellence of many disciplines within the Engineering organization including existing engineering operations staff, agile leaders, software engineers, quality assurance, architects, and managers. As Cox Automotive continues to set higher expectations of itself, this position becomes a critical driver for alignment and consistency.

The ideal candidate will combine a vision of a high performing Engineering organization, a strong program management capability, and an extensive background in leading large multi-discipline organizations to create and deliver programs that result in improved operational excellence for the Engineering organization across Retail Solutions.

Your Role:

  • Partner with the SVP to develop critical operational initiatives
  • Peer with Engineering SDs and VPs in Retail Solutions and operational leaders across business units in order to execute on the critical initiatives developed by the Cox Automotive Operations Office 
  • Ensure operational consistency where it makes sense across over 400 scrum teams
  • Create a data-driven culture with respect to Engineering productivity and outcomes
  • Develop KPIs which help to demonstrate initiative outcomes and Engineering progress
  • Partner with the Product Delivery and Optimization team to execute on the vision of an aligned, agile organization
  • Partner with HRBP/HR to create, manage, and report on operating metrics
  • Implement consistent technology platforms which will enable streamlined enterprise data access for all of CA Engineering and get the most out of our technology investments
  • Partner with communications to convey the Engineering mission and vision and develop overall communications strategy for Engineering leadership (aka Blogs, Emails, Video Scripts, etc…)
  • Stay current on leading edge Engineering practices across the software development industry
  • Manage Engineering-level planning exercises
  • Lead a team of Engineering Operations partners across business units
  • Develop BUR reporting for the SVP Engineering
  • Develop Status Reporting for the SVP Engineering
  • Drive the cultural and practice changes via Engineering Imperatives
  • Survey and follow up on organization change effectiveness, implement changes where needed

Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of technology industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices
  • Strong experience managing large-scale programs
  • Bachelor degree required, MBA or relevant Master's Degree preferred
  • 12+ years of experience, at least 5 years managing large engineering teams
  • Working ability to set project schedules and deliverables, manage budgets and contracts
  • Comprehensive and expert knowledge of the interactive software development process
  • Experience managing and guiding senior leadership via influence rather than command and control techniques
  • Must be able to inspire and maintain a positive atmosphere of innovation and success across a diverse team of engineers
  • Must possess an ability to build key business relationships, and contribute to the emerging technology culture across Cox Automotive
