The Sr. Director, Workplace Security Programs is a member of UnitedHealth Group's (UHG) Corporate Security leadership team. The Corporate Security group is responsible for the Enterprise Workplace Security Program that ensures the protection of the company’s global workforce and physical assets through security risk management platforms.  The Sr. Director will be accountable for developing, communicating and implementing a short-term and long-term personnel security strategy that is aligned with the current state and projected growth of UHG.  This will be achieved through the management of a team focused on the following Corporate Security operational platforms:
  • Security Awareness and Training:  Responsible for the development, coordination and deployment of security awareness and training across the Enterprise.  Cross-functional coordination will be imperative to ensure consistent messaging and to optimize existing resources.
  • Workplace Violence Prevention:  Accountable for the development of a workplace violence prevention program that includes both training and case management.  Manage third-party online training vendor and lead any customization requirements for internal UHG culture alignment.  Responsible for managing investigations into potential threats of violence in the workplace.
  • Executive Security and Special Events:  Responsible for the planning and delivery of executive protection services for designated leaders of UHG.  In addition, accountable for coordinating security for special events as requested by business leaders.
The Sr. Director will be accountable for building and maintaining strong internal partnerships with key stakeholders to include Communications, Enterprise Health & Safety, Human Capital/Employee Relations, Investor Relations, LCRA (Compliance, Employment Law, and Litigation), Marketing, Office of the Chief Executive Officer, Optum Technology, Real Estate Services, and business segment leaders.  This individual will also be responsible for engagement with law enforcement and other external parties as needed.  This role will require rotational after hours on-call availability and up to 25% travel.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop, communicate and implement a short-term and long-term Corporate Security personnel security strategy that is aligned with the current state and projected growth of UHG
  • Manage an operational budget and provide cost analysis for future financial requirements
  • Create and deploy enterprise policies, procedures and operational processes that govern the security for UHG’s workforce
  • Responsible for the development, coordination and deployment of security awareness and training across the Enterprise 
  • Develop a workplace violence prevention program that includes both training and a formal case management process
  • Lead personnel security integration efforts for newly acquired entities
  • Support security services for designated executive leaders and special events
  • Serve as primary liaison to internal and external stakeholders on personnel security issues
  • Develop and maintain strong internal and external partnerships
  • Maintain strong network with local, national and international industry organizations

Required Qualifications:  

  • 15+ years of relevant security experience in the private and/or public sector to include security risk management, intelligence, law enforcement and/or military
  • Experience with program leadership and developing and managing a corporate physical security program
  • Experience in a leadership role in a position of authority and accountability for strategic plan development, budget and resource management, and ongoing measurement of success
  • Experience managing a team, both directly and in a matrixed environment
  • Solid working knowledge of security best practices for a corporate workplace violence prevention training and awareness program
  • Demonstrated skills to manage threats of violence in the workplace
  • Experience developing and executing protective security plans for individuals and large group events
  • Strong leadership engagement and communication skills to include personal briefings, PPTs, and written summaries
  • Experience with effective formal presentation and facilitation skills in a variety of settings
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated skills in managing complex security risks and operating in a global business environment
  • Travel up to 25%

  • Bachelor’s degree
